Embodiments of the present invention provide a method for transmitting low rate signals over an optical transport network, including: adapting the low rate signals into low rate optical channel data units of the same rate level with the low rate signals; asynchronously mapping each of the low rate optical channel data units into a low rate optical channel data tributary unit respectively, and generating justification overhead used for rate adaptation for each of the low rate optical channel data units; and forming a higher order optical channel data unit with at least one low rate optical channel data tributary unit and justification overhead corresponding to the low rate optical channel data tributary unit. The present invention enables the optical transport network to support mapping, multiplexing and highly efficient transmission of low rate signals.

System and method for locating objects and communicating with the same

Communication between a remote locator and a transponder is used to determine the relative position of the transponder. The transponder and locator each include a transmitter and a receiver. The locator transmits an inquiry in the form of a relatively powerful cyclically encoded signal with repetitive elements, uniquely associated with a target transponder. Periodically, each transponder correlates its coded ID against a possible inquiry signal, determining frequency, phase and framing in the process. Upon a match, the transponder transmits a synthesized response coherent with the received signal. The locator integrates multiple cyclical response elements, allowing low-power transmissions from the transponder. The locator correlates the integrated response, determines round-trip Doppler shift, time-of-flight, and then computes the distance and angle to the transponder. The transponder can be wearable, bionically implanted, or attached to, or embedded in, some object.

Optical fiber distributed wireless personal area network

A Wireless Personal Area Network that provides multiple users with multi-gigabit-per-second data rate wireless connectivity and is integrated with an optical fiber distribution network is disclosed. Embodiments relate generally to an integrated fiber optic WPAN architecture that comprises multiple 57-66 GHz remotely located wireless access points interconnected with a centrally located distribution point using optical fiber links. The integrated network provides an efficient, flexible and scalable 57-66 GHz WPAN architecture since the fiber optic links accommodate the delivery of bandwidth intensive services to large numbers of users while seamlessly supporting the diversity of multi-gigabit-per-second data applications. Two approaches for the transport of the WPAN signals over the optical fiber signal distribution network are described. One technique for interconnecting the remote radio access points in the fiber distributed 57-66 GHz WPAN is via an optical fiber network which can transport the wireless signals over the fiber as ‘analog over fiber’. An alternative ‘digital over fiber’ signal transport scheme for the fiber distributed 57-66 GHz WPAN is also described which supports the transport of the multi-gigabit-per-second WPAN digital data streams over fiber.

A method of mixing audio channels is effective at rebalancing the audio without introducing unwanted artifacts or overly softening the discrete presentation of the original audio. This is accomplished between any two or more input channels by processing the audio channels to generate one or more “correlated” audio signals for each pair of input channels. The in-phase correlated signal representing content in both channels that is the same or very similar with little or no phase or time delay is mixed with the input channels. The present approach may also generate an out-of-phase correlated signal (same or similar signals with appreciable time or phase delay) that is typically discarded and a pair of independent signals (signals not present in the other input channel) that may be mixed with the input channels. The provision of both the in-phase correlated signal and the pair of independent signals makes the present approach well suited for the downmixing of audio channels as well.

The self-mixing detector includes at least one detector having a semiconductor substrate and first and second electrodes deposited on the substrate and spaced from each other, wherein the first set of electrodes is connected to the chirp generator and the second set of electrodes is connected to a memory for storing a plurality of frames of image data.

After selection of the symbol corresponding to the data to be transmitted during a given timing interval, the frequency domain representation of the plurality of tones corresponding to that symbol is converted to the time domain for transmission. That time domain signal is converted back to the frequency domain by the receiver and the resultant signal processed by M-ary signal correlators synchronized with coding established by the transmitter to determine the transmitted symbol.
