In one aspect, the present invention provides a simple method of signaling reference signal muting information to receiving radio equipment, such as items of user equipment (UEs). The reference signals may be positioning reference signals and/or cell-specific reference signals, for example. Disclosed is an apparatus and method for transmitting the synchronization signal in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based cellular system. The cell search process widely used in the OFDM based cellular system is divided into two steps for obtaining the frame timing synchronization and obtaining the cell-specific scrambling code. Accordingly, a cell search time and the complexity of the cell search can be reduced.

A method and apparatus for performing mobility measurement in a communication network (100) is described. The method comprises of receiving a subframe sequence pattern from a node in the communication network (100). The subframe sequence pattern indicates types of subframes being transmitted by a neighboring cell node (104) in a neighboring cell (112). The method includes receiving a subframe from a sequence of subframes transmitted by the neighboring cell node (104) in the neighboring cell (112), and determining that the received subframe is a multicast subframe based on the subframe sequence pattern. More specifically, a method for a user equipment (UE) to perform Radio Link Monitoring (RLM) in a wireless communication system comprises performing second RLM on a cell based on a Reference Signal (RS) other than a Cell-specific Reference Signal (CRS) and determining an Radio Link Failure (RLF) with respect to the cell based on the second RLM, wherein a condition for determining an RLF applied to the second RLM is different from the condition for determining an RLF applied to CRS-based first RLM.
