Litz wire is a special type of multistrand wire or cable used in electronics to carry alternating current (AC) at radio frequencies. The wire is designed to reduce the skin effect and proximity effect losses in conductors used at frequencies up to about 1 MHz. It consists of many thin wire strands, individually insulated and twisted or woven together, following one of several carefully prescribed patterns often involving several levels (groups of twisted wires are twisted together, etc.). The result of these winding patterns is to equalize the proportion of the overall length over which each strand is at the outside of the conductor. This has the effect of distributing the current equally among the wire strands, reducing the resistance. Litz wire is used in high Q inductors for radio transmitters and receivers operating at low frequencies, induction heating equipment and switching power supplies.

Printed circuit board coil

A multilayer printed circuit board (“PCB”) coil that simulates a coil formed from litz wire. The PCB includes a plurality of alternating conductor and insulating layers interconnected to cooperatively form the coil. Each conductor layer includes a trace that follows the desired coil shape and is divided into a plurality of discrete conductor segments. The segments are electrically connected across layers to provide a plurality of current flow paths (or filaments) that undulate between the layers in a regular, repeating pattern. The coil may be configured so that each filament spends a substantially equal amount of time in proximity to the paired coil and therefore contributes substantially equally to the self or mutual inductance of the coil. Each conductor layer may include a plurality of associated traces and intralayer connector that interconnected so that each filament undulates not only upwardly / downwardly, but also inwardly / outwardly in a regular, repeating pattern.

Apparatus and method for transcranial and nerve magnetic stimulation

An electromagnet coil comprising Litz wire windings and power leads without break or interruption is cooled by a perfluorinated liquid by sensible and phase change heat transfer in a closed system. The electromagnet coil may be housed in a pentagonal or hexagonal pressure vessel to allow high packing densities in an array or helmet configuration. The helmet is then lowered over a human cranium for transcranial electromagnetic stimulation. The Litz wire windings reduce the power and voltages required for operation, yet allow production of over 2 T of accurately directed magnetic pulses for direct nerve or neuron stimulation. The perfluorinated liquid maintains the temperature of the helmet to less than 35-40° C., ensuring a comfortable temperature device for a human test subject. A utility cable connects the helmet to an external cooling unit and an external power supply.

NMR and MRI apparatus and method

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals are detected in microtesla fields. Prepolarization in millitesla fields is followed by detection with an untuned dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. Because the sensitivity of the SQUID is frequency independent, both signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and spectral resolution are enhanced by detecting the NMR signal in extremely low magnetic fields, where the NMR lines become very narrow even for grossly inhomogeneous measurement fields. Additional signal to noise benefits are obtained by use of a low noise polarization coil, comprising litz wire or superconducting materials. MRI in ultralow magnetic field is based on the NMR at ultralow fields. Gradient magnetic fields are applied, and images are constructed from the detected NMR signals.

The invention discloses a loosely coupled transformer device for wirelessly charging an electric vehicle. The device comprises an emission module, a reception module and two shielding cover plates, wherein the emission module and the reception module are coupled to each other. According to the technical scheme of the invention, the magnetic leakage at the back of a transformer can be well shielded by the shielding cover plates. Meanwhile, a magnetic conductive core structure is arranged in each shielding cover plate, so that the flow direction of the magnetic leakage at the back of the transformer can be guided by the magnetic conductive core structure. The coupling coefficient of primary and secondary sides is increased. Meanwhile, the loss of the cover plates is reduced and the efficiency of the whole device is improved. At the same time, a plurality of strands of litz wires are connected in parallel to form a coil, so that the coil loss of the transformer is reduced. A strip-shaped magnetic core reduces the weight of the transformer and increases the coupling coefficient of primary and secondary sides. By means of an insulating plate, the magnetic core and the coil can be conveniently fixed. Therefore, the above transformer device is good in shielding performance, simple, firm, high in coupling coefficient of primary and secondary sides, and high in overall efficiency. As a result, the device is very suitable for the wireless charging of electric vehicles.

The rectangular litz wire may be arranged as a DD coil having first and second co-planar loops. The loops may have a shared single-stacked inner portion and double-stacked outer portions.
