Aerodynamic tractor-trailer wind fairing that improves operating fuel economy

A tractor-trailer wind fairing panel assembly includes two side and one top fairing panels that mount to a truck tractor and aerodynamically bridge the air gap to any fifth-wheel utility trailer being pulled by the tractor. Such fairing panels are hinged on their leading edges so their distal trailing edges can swing a bit to accommodate twisting and turning of the utility trailer during use. The hinges all mount to a cab adapter collar that helps fit the whole to the contoured surfaces of the rear of a typical truck tractor cab. The distal ends of the trailing edges are fitted with inward directed wind seals. Rows of ball bearing pucks are arranged in the crowns of the inward directed wind seals to reduce friction and wear as the fairing panels swing to accommodate the twisting and turning of the utility trailer.

Fifth wheel release lever

A second class lever device provides additional mechanical advantage to pull the release handle in the fifth wheel hitch of a truck tractor and semi trailer combination. Such release handles can bind and become difficult to release due to misalignment between tractor and trailer, corrosion or lack of lubrication, etc. The present release lever includes an elongate fulcrum bar to bridge the gap between the tractor tires and the overlying side of the trailer, with a lever arm extending therefrom. A tension member extends from the lever arm, between the handle end and fulcrum end thereof. The lever arm telescopes for storage, with the fulcrum bar pivoting and sliding in its lever arm attachment to further facilitate compact storage. The tension member preferably comprises a chain, with a release handle engaging hook adjustably installed on the chain to adjust the effective length thereof as required.

The single-chip microcomputer (3) measures and calculates a distance between the tractor (1) and a trailer (2) and an alignment angle according to distance information fed back by the microwave radar ranging sensors, a reference backing-up path is displayed to a driver to guide for backing up, and the tractor (1) and the trailer (2) are docked conveniently and quickly.

The fifth wheel release tool is a device for applying the required force for releasing the latch mechanism of the fifth wheel hitch securing a semi-trailer to a truck tractor. The release tool has a hook which is removably secured to the hitch release handle, a non-resilient line extending from the hook, a treadle or stirrup secured to the opposite end of the line from the hook, and a saddle which is removably secured to a relatively fixed structure and over or through which the flexible line runs.
