1570 results about "Semi-trailer" patented technology

A semi-trailer is a trailer without a front axle. In the United States, the term is also used to refer to the combination of a truck and a semi-trailer, a tractor-trailer. A large proportion of a semi-trailer's weight is supported by a tractor unit, or a detachable front-axle assembly known as a dolly, or the tail of another trailer. A semi-trailer is normally equipped with landing gear (legs which can be lowered) to support it when it is uncoupled. Many semi-trailers have wheels that are capable of being totally dismounted and are also relocatable (repositionable) to better distribute load to bearing wheel weight factors. Semi-trailers are more popular for transport than full trailers, which have both front and rear axles. Ease of backing is cited as one of the semi's chief advantages. A road tractor coupled to a semi-trailer is often called a semi-trailer truck or "semi" in North America & Australia, and an articulated lorry or "artic" in the UK.

An improved method and device for reducing the base drag of bluff bodies, including large boxy highway vehicles such as semi-trailer trucks, which uses low drag vortex generators in combination with either a trailing panel or shortened boattail plates, to provide greater base drag reduction than other previously known methods. The preferred embodiment reduces the required length of boattail plates by over half, making it compatible with current U.S. regulations for trailer underride bars, and providing easier access for rear cargo doors. The device is easily installed as an add-on device on both new and existing truck bodies. In an alternate configuration, the shape of one or more sets of shortened boattail plates can be built into the rear body shape of vehicles, to maximize the interior volume for a given total vehicle length.

Method and Driving Dynamics Control System for Stabilizing a Car-Trailer Combination

When swaying motions of a trailer or semi-trailer of a car-trailer combination are encountered, input signals which are taken into consideration to calculate a reference signal frequently include also oscillation components, due to which driving dynamics control for stabilization of the car-trailer combination can become very unreliable. To enhance the reliability of driving dynamics control of this type, a method is disclosed in which an input signal (Y) is sensed that includes signal oscillations which are due to a swaying motion of the trailer or semi-trailer and are superimposed on a base component (YBasis) of the input signal (Y). A reference signal is calculated from the input signal (Y), in which case the calculation is executed in such a way that the reference signal by approximation corresponds to a reference signal which is determined from the base component (YBasis) of the input signal (Y). A correcting variable for influencing the driving behavior of the towing vehicle of the car-trailer combination is then determined depending on a deviation between the reference signal and a detected actual signal. Furthermore, the invention discloses a driving dynamics control system which is appropriate to implement the method.

Mobile assembly hall

A trailer, such as a conventional full trailer or semi trailer used for hauling freight, is convertible into an assembly hall by folding its sidewalls upwardly to define ceiling extensions extending from the trailer roof. Additional floor extensions which are pivotally affixed to the sides of the trailer floor may then be folded downwardly in substantially parallel relation to the trailer floor to define an assembly hall floor. The floor extensions fold in nested relation between the folding trailer sidewalls / ceiling extensions such that the entire arrangement fits within the same space envelope as the conventional trailer. Once unfolded, the trailer may be used as a shelter / assembly hall for meetings and other events, and may be provided with interior seating, safety railings, and other enhancements.

Method of conforming an adherent film to a substrate by application of vacuum

Films are closely conformed to substrates by reducing the air pressure to a subatmospheric level in at least one airflow pathway that is present in the film or the substrate. The reduced air pressure enables the film to tightly contact the substrate in locations where protrusions or depressions on the substrate are present. The method is particularly useful for conforming film containing graphics to a variety of substrates such as the sides of semi-trailers or concrete block walls, even in instances where the semi-trailer sides include rivets and / or grooves and where the concrete block wall is relatively rough.

Collapsible airfoil for trucks and trailers

The purpose of the device is to minimize drag and turbulence otherwise occurring at the rear of a semi trailer, in order to reduced the consumption of fuel by a semi tractor. This is accomplished using directionally flexible sheets of composite material, which create contours that taper towards a terminating edge to form a teardrop shape, as established by panels attached to the top and bottom of either door. Along the trailing edge of the main body, another vertical panel known as a wake separator maintains separation between confliction columns of air. An additional wake separator attached to the bottom of the device performs a similar function, and will facilitate collapse in the event of a collision.

Tire-detecting wheel chock apparatus

A wheel chock apparatus includes a chock body for chocking a tire of a vehicle such as a semi-trailer prior to loading or unloading the trailer by a towmotor at a docking bay. When properly positioned, the chock body prevents movement of the vehicle away from the docking bay during the loading or unloading operation. Such movement poses a possible hazard to the cargo being loaded or unloaded, to the equipment performing the loading / unloading operations, and to the operator of such equipment. The chock body includes a sensor mounted on or embedded in the body, which is capable of detecting a properly chocked tire. The sensor is electrically connected to a microcontroller programmed to control an indicator, such as a visual light or audible alarm, that will alert an equipment operator on the docking bay as to whether the driver of the vehicle has properly chocked the tires.

INTEGRATED PROPULSION & STEERING For Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV), Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV), AV (Autonomous Vehicles); Electric Trucks, Buses and Semi-Trailers

A vehicle, integrated all-wheel propulsion and steering system with plurality of propulsion and steering power sources, designed with enumerate specifications are coupled to, and de-coupled from a final drive of the vehicle propulsion system. A controller receives input-signals from the driver steering-wheel sensor; computes a set of reactions to the plurality of steering-actuators, wherein feedback-mechanism with each wheel-position sensor, the controller secures each wheel in its computed angle. In different speed and load conditions, the controller is programmed to compute a desired power demand then couple to the final drive[s] the propulsion power source[s] that is designed to do-the-job with the least energy consumption. When the vehicle changes speed and load, the controller couples a different power source[s], and de-couples the previous power source[s] to meet the power demand. In turning-modes, whilst positioning every wheel in its computed position, the controller computes the different distances the left and the right wheels of the vehicle have to travel, wherein the controller moves-up the propulsion power sources velocity to the wheels opposite to the turn to make a perfect turn without EPS assistance.
