Internal and external disc shunts alleviate back pain

The intervertebral disc is avascular. Nutrients and waste are diffused through adjacent vertebral bodies into the disc. As we age, calcified layers form between the disc and vertebral bodies, blocking diffusion of nutrients, oxygen and pH buffer in blood. Under anaerobic conditions, lactic acid is produced, irritating nerve endings and causing nonspecific pain. In addition, the disc begins to starve and flatten. The weight shifts abnormally from disc to the facet joints causing strain and back pain.Shunt coils are formed and spiraled over the distal shaft of a twistable needle, then deployed into the nucleus of a degenerated disc by a sliding sleeve. The coils serve as an internal shunt, drawing nutrients, oxygen and buffering solute from the superior and inferior diffusion zones to neutralize lactic acid in the mid layer of the degenerated disc. The coils also serve as a bulking agent within the repaired disc to sustain compression and reduce facet loading and segmental instability. The end strands of the shunt coils can also extend from the disc to draw blood plasma from muscle or bodily circulation to expedite neutralization of lactic acid and rebuild disc matrix for pain relief and disc regeneration.

U-shaped disc shunt and delivery device

The intervertebral disc contains no blood vessels. Nutrients and waste are diffused mainly through adjacent vertebral bodies. As we age, calcified layers form between the disc and vertebral bodies, blocking diffusion. The disc begins to starve and flatten. The weight shifts abnormally from disc to the facet joints causing strain and back pain. Under anaerobic conditions, lactic acid is produced causing acidic irritation and unspecific pain. A U-shaped disc shunt is delivered into and sealed within the degenerated disc simply by needle puncturing and withdrawal, to draw nutrients from bodily circulation into the avascular disc. A continual supply of nutrients increases biosynthesis of the water-retaining sulfated glycosaminoglycans, hence swelling pressure within the disc. The weight is re-shifted from the facet joints to the regenerated disc, alleviating back pain. With oxygen transported through the shunt, anaerobic production of lactic acid is minimized. In addition, the residual lactic acid is expelled through the U-shaped shunt during disc compression into bodily circulation to alleviate unspecific pain.

Controlled bale ejection mechanism

ActiveUS7197979B2Eliminates twine unwinding and damagePrevents substantial bale rollingLoadersMowersHydraulic cylinderWeight shift
A controlled bale ejection mechanism for an agricultural baler is provided. The mechanism includes a bale support which is positioned below the bale when it is ejected, that catches and supports the bale. The bale support is then translated rearward by a hydraulic cylinder and guided by support rails. As the bale support and bale approach the desired location, the bale support is lowered by tilting the rail assembly downward. An articulating shoe is used to support and lower the rails. The bale support tilts as it is lowered, thereby creating a dumping action. If additional tilting is required due to geometry limitations, additional bale support tilt can be created by a weight shift of the bale support, changing the trajectory of the rail or torque induced by the bale support cylinder. The bale is set down on the ground and the ramp assembly resets to prevent the bale from rolling forward and preparing for the next cycle. Springs are used to retract the articulating shoe and lift the rails into transport position. The timing of this system is integrated into the hydraulic baler functions (primarily the discharge gate) so no additional action is required from the operator when ejecting the bale.

Disc drive and optical disc drive

An easily manufacturable optical disc drive that provides for accurate writing and reading of information signals to and from a disc loaded therein by maintaining the horizontal balance of its base during operation, and that provides for smooth loading and unloading of a disc. The optical disc drive includes a base formed of a single metal plate of 1.4–1.8 mm thickness. Major components of the base (i.e., a disc rotation driving mechanism, an optical pickup and a pickup feeding mechanism) are disposed on the base in such a way that the total weight of these components is nearly evenly distributed on the base. The optical pickup is adapted to move across an optical disc between its inner and outer circumferences, while the optical disc is rotated by the disc rotation driving mechanism. The base is supported by a plurality (i.e., at least three) of supporting members, each with an elastic support piece. These supporting members are disposed symmetrically with respect to a center line of the base along the direction of the optical pickup's movement. The symmetrical disposition of these supporting members, together with the vibration absorbing nature of the elastic support pieces and the balanced weight distribution on the base, eliminates weight shifts / imbalance caused by the optical pickup movement, thereby maintaining the horizontal balance of the base at all time during operation of the optical disc drive. The ease of manufacture can be achieved by selecting even numbers (e.g., four) of the supporting members for the base.

Multirule Weight Control

A method for controlling a body weight and any weight-dependent parameters comprising consistent daily measurement of these parameters, setting monthly runs for monitoring, constructing a new control scale for each run based on individual variability of these parameters for the previous month, and identification of in-control, out-of-control and on-target states according to real nonrandom shifts of these parameters. The real shifts among their random fluctuations are detected by special control rules developed before for quality control. The method provides evaluation of progress and efficacy of the weight control over the run by measuring a mean value of results, variability of results and a score for weight shifts. The method may be embodied in paper template forms separated or inserted in any printed materials as well as in algorithms for computer programs inserted into a weight scale and other measuring devices, personal computer, PDA and other electronic devices, and in algorithms for programs provided direct data transfer from measuring devices to the computer.
