Adaptive energy absorption system for a vehicle seat

An adaptive energy absorption system for a vehicle seat is disclosed, utilizing an adaptive energy absorber or variable profile energy absorber (VPEA) for mitigating occupant injury due to extreme vehicle movement (e.g., during a vehicle shock event), and / or for mitigating vibration experienced by an occupant of the vehicle seat during normal vehicle operating conditions. Various configurations of dual-goal energy absorption apparatuses using both VPEA and fixed load energy absorbers (FLEAs) that enable both shock mitigation and vibration isolation are disclosed. A semi-active control absorption system, comprising a VPEA and FPEA configured to work in series, is also disclosed.

Method of optimizing cardiac resynchronization therapy using sensor signals of septal wall motion

The present invention relates to monitoring septal wall motion of the atrial and / or ventricular chambers of a heart for optimizing cardiac pacing intervals based on signals derived from said wall motion. At least one lead of medical device is equipped with a motion sensor adapted to couple to septal tissue. The device receives and may post-process (e.g., suitably filter, rectify and / or integrate) motion signals to determine acceleration, velocity or displacement. During pacing interval optimization the wall motion is measured for many pacing intervals and the pacing interval setting(s) that produce minimal wall motion are implemented for therapy delivery. In addition, the present invention provides methods for periodically determining whether to cease or resume delivery of a bi-ventricular pacing therapy to a patient that may have experienced beneficial reverse remodeling of the heart.

A home intelligent service robot for recognizing a user and following the motion of a user and a method thereof are provided. The home intelligent service robot includes a driver, a vision processor, and a robot controller. The driver moves an intelligent service robot according to an input moving instruction. The vision processor captures images through at least two or more cameras in response to a capturing instruction for following a target object, minimizes the information amount of the captured image, and discriminates objects in the image into the target object and obstacles. The robot controller provides the capturing instruction for following the target object in a direction of collecting instruction information to the vision processor when the instruction information is collected from outside, and controls the intelligent service robot to follow and move the target object while avoiding obstacles based on the discriminating information from the vision processor.

Surgical instruments and procedures for stabilizing the beating heart during coronary artery bypass graft surgery

Devices for stabilizing tissue during a surgical procedure. The beating heart may be stabilized during a surgical procedure on the heart, using a described stabilizing device. In one example, a stabilizing device is introduced through an opening in the chest and brought into contact with the beating heart. By contacting the heart with the device and by exerting a stabilizing force on the device, the motion of the heart caused by the contraction of the heart muscles id effectively eliminated such that the heart is stabilized and the site of the surgery moves only minimally if at all.

Adaptable Socket System, Method, and Kit

An adjustable socket system, method, and kit for use with prosthetic devices or orthotic, orthopedic, or exoskeletal support devices that includes a paddle and a compressing device coupled to the paddle. The paddle is chosen from a plurality of paddles of different shapes in such a way that the paddle inner surface is substantially coextensive with a soft tissue area overlying skeletal structures. The compressing device presses the paddle against the soft tissue area in order to minimize the motion of the paddle relative to the underlying skeletal structures without causing discomfort to the user or compressing areas not in contact with the paddle, allowing compressed tissue to flow into uncompressed areas. The system, method, and kit can include an external tool, sensors, actuators, and controllers, to assist fitting and for adjustment after fitting. A stabilizer can be added to resist the bending force on the paddle.

Method and device for dispensing from liquid concentrates beverages having multi-layer visual appearance

The invention relates to a method for dispensing a beverage with the visual appearance of multi-layers obtained from dilution of concentrates in proper dilution ratios. A first liquid layer is first delivered with a controlled density. A second liquid layer is diluted to a density that is lower than the density of the first liquid layer so that the first and second layers form a stable layered arrangement with the second liquid layer of lower density remaining spatially above the first liquid layer to provide a visually distinct layer as compared to the first liquid layer in the container. The invention also relates to a dispensing device and to a machine readable program enabling the device to deliver the multi-layer appearance beverage according to the method of the invention.

Motion clutter suppression for image-subtracting cameras

Embodiments of the present invention relate to systems and methods for minimizing motion clutter in image-generation devices. Temporally-interleaved image-subtraction reduces the magnitude of motion clutter and has no adverse effect on the desired ambient-light cancellation of static images. Embodiments of image-generation devices employing temporally-interleaved image-subtraction include single, double, triple, and series accumulator configurations. All four embodiments allow synchronization with scene illuminators and may be implemented on a single electronic chip. Temporally-interleaved image-subtraction is particularly well suited for use in video eyetracking applications where ambient light and scene motion can cause significant problems.

A waste-carrying pouch is disclosed, for use by pet owners to carry waste (feces) to a trash can or waste basket. The pouch hangs from a leash, near the handle, and can be reversibly opened and closed. An improved design uses a combination of: (i) two attachment points, positioned at the two ends of the pouch, to minimize swinging motion by a pouch loaded with waste, and (ii) walls made of a semi-stiff plastic-impregnated fabric, such as “420D” nylon with a polyvinyl chloride coating, to providea suitable degree of “stiffening” to make opening and closing the pouch easier and more reliable even when a leash is being jerked and tugged. Pouch-and-leash combinations are also with either standard or retractable leashes, having rings or other coupling devices on the leash, and pouch assortments are disclosed with a range of sizes.

Semi-transparency in size-constrained user interface

The present invention provides a method that increases screen space of a computing device by using semi-transparent functional areas that overlap non-functional content areas on the screen. This method allows for relatively large functional targets on the screen—thus mitigating the usability problems associated with tiny buttons and other images—while also allowing the underlying content on the screen to be clearly visible. A main design feature of this invention is that two functional areas are never allowed to overlap. An overlap condition would cause user confusion as to which layer is active. Instead, the interface is designed to foreground functionality in all instances.

Adaptive energy absorption system for a vehicle seat

An adaptive energy absorption system for a vehicle seat that functions in dual-modes, including a primary mode during severe (shock event) operation and a secondary mode during normal (non-shock event) operation. When operating in primary mode, the present system automatically adjusts a VPEA in real-time to keep loads transmitted to the occupant's body below acceptable injury threshold levels, and can recover to perform said function for multiple shock events. When operating in secondary mode the system reduces vehicle vibration transmitted to the occupant, thereby reducing fatigue and increasing situational awareness.

System and method for bone fixation

A system and method for maintaining positions of bones fixed or approximated relative to each other is provided that is ideal for minimizing interference with surrounding viscera in spinal column procedures, although other good application therefor are also disclosed. In the preferred form, a cable anchoring apparatus in the form of a screw member having an elongate shank that is threaded for substantially the full length thereof is employed. An internal driver surface is provided so that the size of the proximate end of the shank can be minimized or maintained consistently sized with respect to the reminder of the shank with no enlarged driver head formed thereat. This allows the amount of bone material that is removed from full insertion of the screw anchor to be minimized, i.e. no countersinking for an enlarged driver head is necessary, thus improving holding power of the cable anchor herein. Further, the full threading of the shank for substantially its entire length enables the screw member to be fully sunk into the bone so that no portions thereof, such as an enlarged screw head, project into the surrounding body cavity in which the bone is located. In the spinal column application, a criss-cross cable pattern is disclosed to better resist torsional forces and keep any decompression devices in place in the gap between adjacent vertebrae.
