Illumination apparatus providing longitudinal illumination

An illumination device using an innovative design to provide a uniform, highly concentrated and substantially longitudinal illumination. The device includes, at least one light source unit, a compound light guide with a built-in light-extracting feature and a reflective envelope. The compound light guide comprises two optically coupled sub-guides. A first sub-guide has a constant cross-section area with a profile optimized for an integral light-concentrating optics, and a second sub-guide has a varying cross-section area for controlling local light flux density inside the light guide and providing assembly means. Said light extracting feature having variable light extraction efficiency improves illumination uniformity at an area close to a light input end of the light guide without displacing a light source from the central normal line of a light-extracting feature. The extracted light from the light-extracting feature forms an effective light-emitting object with a constant width for the integral light-concentrating optics and therefore, the width of the light-extracting feature can be modulated to improve illumination uniformity without affecting the width of illumination. The reflective envelope recycles all light leaked out of the light guide and protects the light guide from environmental contamination and provides mechanical interface between the device and the application assembly.

A computer-implemented method provides an educational environment in a virtual reality setting. Individuals navigate a virtual reality campus by using an avatar to interact with other users and to engage in learning experiences in the virtual setting. Individuals complete projects in virtual reality by accessing educational materials in electronic format and communicating with one another via text-based chats and real time audio. The virtual reality campus emulates a physical campus by providing meeting spaces and work areas where students spontaneously share information and complete pre-planned tasks. An electronic database tracks biographical and educational information about each user, that user's progress in achieving study goals, and the deliverables that the student produces to fulfill requirements of virtual instruction. The database also links to other systems, such as a registration database, so that the student's entire learning experience on both a physical campus and in virtual reality can be conveniently accessed electronically.

Method and system for generating fully-textured 3D

A 3D modeling system for automatically generating fully-textured 3D models of objects from a sequence of images taken around the objects is disclosed. There are several processes developed to facilitate the operation of the 3D modeling system by an ordinary skilled person. Still another process is a 3D mesh model generation process that begins with the tree structure and generates self-constraint and interconnected triangles, in a sense that all triangles intersect with each other either not at all or at common boundary faces, to represent the shape of the 3D object. Yet still another process is a textured patch process that provides a useful mechanism for a user to edit and modify a fully-textured 3D model in a desired manner by the user.

Ablation treatment planning and device

An ablation treatment planning and, optionally, guiding method usable for e.g. tumour tissue ablation with a cryoablation needle which cools down an adjacent tumour tissue to thereby generate an ablation volume is proposed. In order to be able to plan an ablation treatment, a 3D image data set of a region of interest may be acquired by e.g. X-ray imaging using e.g. a C-arm system. Then, 3D model data of the ablation volume are introduced into the 3D image data set for example by tagging image pixels using a stencil buffer and possibly by culling specific inside areas and / or outside areas of the ablation volume. Finally, a 2D image to be visualized to a physician and comprising a projection of the region of interest and the ablation volume is drawn wherein an MPR (multi planar reformatting) plane in which the 2D image is drawn is used as a clipping plane. With such graphical approach, an ablation volume having any arbitrary shape such as for example an ellipsoid shape may be visualized within a 3D image space by drawing 2D images in any desired MPR plane such that also oblique orientations of the ablation volume can be represented. In a subsequent guiding procedure, an ablation needle may be guided to a location and in an orientation as previously planned.
