Ultra-low background gas-filled alpha counter

A method and counter for reducing the background counting rate in gas-filled alpha particle counters wherein the counter is constructed in such a manner as to exaggerate the differences in the features in preamplifier pulses generated by collecting the charges in ionization tracks produced by alpha particles emanating from different regions within the counter and then using pulse feature analysis to recognize these differences and so discriminate between different regions of emanation. Thus alpha particles emitted from the sample can then be counted while those emitted from the counter components can be rejected, resulting in very low background counting rates even from large samples. In one embodiment, a multi-wire ionization chamber, different electric fields are created in different regions of the counter and the resultant difference in electron velocities during charge collection allow alpha particles from the sample and counter backwall to be distinguished. In a second embodiment, a parallel-plate ionization chamber, the counter dimensions are adjusted so that charge collection times are much longer for ionization tracks caused by sample source alpha particles than for those caused by anode source alpha particles. In both embodiments a guard electrode can be placed about the anode's perimeter and secondary pulse feature analysis performed on signal pulses output from a preamplifier attached to this guard electrode to further identify and reject alpha particles emanating from the counter's sidewalls in order to further lower the counter's background.

The device of the invention is provided with the host telecontrol workstation and the standby telecontrol workstation which are respectively provided with an event handling module and a double-processor communication module; the double-processor communication modules of the host telecontrol workstation and the standby telecontrol workstation are connected and a double-processor dispatching information synchronization module is arranged and connected between the double-processor communication modules and the event handling modules of the host telecontrol workstation and the standby telecontrol workstation. Compared with the prior art, the double-processor dispatching information synchronization module of the host telecontrol workstation and the standby telecontrol workstation lines events received by the event handling module, detects whether the event handling module sends events to a remote dispatching system, marks or deletes events sent out from the event line, and then notices the standby unit of the event line by the double-processor communication module and the content received by the host is operated at the same time, thus no transmission leakage and no extra data transmission are realized.

A coin discriminating method includes steps of irradiating a surface of a coin with light, photoelectrically detecting light reflected by the surface of the coin, producing detected pattern data of the surface of the coin, binarizing corresponding reference pattern data so that “1” is assigned to pixel data having a signal intensity level equal to or higher than a predetermined signal intensity level and “0” is assigned to pixel data having a signal intensity level lower than the predetermined signal intensity level to produce reference bright portion pattern data consisting of “1” pixel data and reference dark portion pattern data consisting of “0” pixel data, extracting bright portion pattern data consisting of pixels corresponding to pixels included in the reference bright portion pattern data and dark portion pattern data consisting of pixels corresponding to pixels included in the reference dark portion pattern data from the detected pattern data, and discriminating whether or not the surface of the coin is damaged to higher than the predetermined level by comparing the difference between the bright portion data signal intensity average value and dark portion data signal intensity average value with a threshold value of coins of a corresponding denomination.

The invention provides a method for distinguishing the shutting of a 800 kV extra-high voltage direct-current valve group. A direct-current power transmission system is composed of two poles and each pole is composed of two 400 kV valve groups; each valve group corresponds to a relevant converter transformer; a stable control device is used for collecting three-phase current and three-phase voltage of the converter transformer; when the following three conditions are met, a valve group shutting or emergent stopping signal sent by a direct-current pole control system is received and the valve group is confirmed to have faults and the valve group is shut by time delay; and the three conditions are as follows: (1) a mutational volume starting of changes of current or power of the converter transformer is carried out; (2) after the mutational volume starting, a current real-time power Pdck of the converter transformer is less than 'a stopping threshold constant value, namely a stopping power constant value of the direct-current valve group' Pdcstop; after a direct-current system has the pole shutting, the Pdck (Pdcstop) is judged; and (3) before the mutational volume starting, a power Pdc_ of the converter transformer at a previous moment is more than a pre-set operation threshold constant value, namely 'a run power constant value of the direct-current valve group' Pdcrun.
