A system is described for maintaining synchrony of operations among a plurality of devices that have independent clocking arrangements. The system includes a task distribution device that distributes tasks to a synchrony group comprising a plurality of devices that are to perform the tasks distributed by the task distribution device in synchrony. The task distribution device distributes each task to the members of the synchrony group over a network. Each task is associated with a time stamp that indicates a time, relative to a clock maintained by the task distribution device, at which the members of the synchrony group are to execute the task. Each member of the synchrony group periodically obtains from the task distribution device an indication of the current time indicated by its clock, determines a time differential between the task distribution device's clock and its respective clock and determines therefrom a time at which, according to its respective clock, the time stamp indicates that it is to execute the task.

In a digital data processing system having an on-line file system component, a method and apparatus for archiving the contents of a selected client volume stored on the file system. The archiving is performed automatically, beginning with an initial duplication of the existing contents of the client volume into an archive volume, then continuing as changes, including additions, deletions and modifications, are made to the files comprising the client volume. Older, previously-archived versions of modified files are gracefully discarded so as to moderate the rate of growth of the archive volume. The archive volume may be used to restore the client volume, either selectively or in whole, in the event of inadvertent damage to, or loss of, files in the client volume.

The invention relates to a process for assigning tasks in a multiprocessor digital data processing system having a preemptive operating system, and an architecture for implementing the process. The system comprises processors (200–203, 210–213) capable of processing the tasks in parallel, divided into groups (200–201, 202–203). An elementary queue (5a, 5b) is associated with each of the processor groups (200–201, 202–203) and stores tasks to be executed. The invention provides an improved SAN of type having one or more host digital data processors, coupled to one or more storage devices. At least a selected one of the hosts includes a file system that effects access by the host to assigned storage devices. This can be, by way of non-limiting example, an AIX journal file system, a Veritas file system, a Unix file systems using Veritas volume manager or other host platform file system that oversees file and other data accesses between the host and those assigned devices. In response to a request by (or on behalf of) the selected host for extension of the file system, a manager (e.g., executing on a further digital data processor) assigns one of more further storage devices to that digital data processor.
