Robust separation of speech signals in a noisy environment

A method for improving the quality of a speech signal extracted from a noisy acoustic environment is provided. In one approach, a signal separation process is associated with a voice activity detector. The voice activity detector is a two-channel detector, which enables a particularly robust and accurate detection of voice activity. When speech is detected, the voice activity detector generates a control signal. The control signal is used to activate, adjust, or control signal separation processes or post-processing operations to improve the quality of the resulting speech signal. In another approach, a signal separation process is provided as a learning stage and an output stage. The learning stage aggressively adjusts to current acoustic conditions, and passes coefficients to the output stage. The output stage adapts more slowly, and generates a speech-content signal and a noise dominant signal. When the learning stage becomes unstable, only the learning stage is reset, allowing the output stage to continue outputting a high quality speech signal.

Battery monitoring system with low power and end-of-life messaging and shutdown

A battery monitoring apparatus that senses battery conditions such as low battery charge, end of battery capacity, and end of battery life, and responds by taking actions such as sending messages to a remote site and / or powering down. A rechargeable battery is coupled to one or more power-consuming electrical components, including battery monitoring equipment. The battery monitoring equipment senses battery charge. In response to a low-battery-charge condition, the battery monitoring equipment transmits a battery status message to a remote site and powers-down some of the electrical components. Whenever the battery nears the end of its capacity, the monitoring equipment powers down all electronic components and awaits the application of external power. The invention also tracks the time required for the battery charge to deplete. Charge duration decreases over time, and whenever it reaches a predetermined minimum, the battery monitoring equipment transmits a representative status message to the remote site.

Composite control for a graphical user interface

A system and method for manipulating computer data using a new GUI element is disclosed. In a particular embodiment, the new GUI element is a composite of a traditional GUI button control and a traditional GUI slider control. In one embodiment, a composite slidable button control appears and functions similar to a traditional button control on the GUI. Dragging the composite control past its predetermined anchor distance un-anchors the composite control allowing it to travel similar to a traditional slider control, optionally constrained in direction(s) and distance(s) by predetermined settings. During the slider adjustment phase, the composite control can optionally overlap other GUI elements realizing a more compact and efficient GUI appearance. In another embodiment, a composite clickable slider control appears and functions similar to a traditional slider control on the GUI. Clicking on the composite control's slider handle invokes the button functionality while dragging the handle invokes the slider functionality, again affording the composite control the ability to function as both a button and a slider control.

Method and apparatus for accelerating data access operations in a database system

Data access operations in a database system may be accelerated by allowing the memory cache to be supplemented with a disk cache. The disk cache can store data that isn't able to fit in the memory cache and, since it doesn't contain the primary copy of the data for the database, may organize the data in such a way that the data is able to be streamed from the disks in response to data read operations. The reduced number of read data operations allows the data to be read from the disk cache faster than it could be served from the primary storage facilities, which might not allow the data to be organized in the same manner. The cache hit ratio may be increased by compressing data prior to storing it in the cache. Additionally, where a particular portion of data stored on the disk cache is being used heavily, that portion may be pulled into memory cache to accelerate access to that portion of data.

Radio communication system

A sleep length calculation unit 410 of a terminal calculates a sleep length based on what is contained in a PLCP header of a frame, and sets the calculated length on a timer 430. An address detection unit 420 of the terminal detects a destination address from inside a MAC header of the frame to see if this frame is destined for another terminal. If the frame is found destined for another terminal, then this terminal gives a power supply unit 180 an instruction to start sleeping while causing the timer 430 to start counting time. When the sleep length is found to have elapsed on the timer 430, the terminal gives the power supply unit 180 an instruction to stop sleeping. If what is contained in the PLCP header or MAC header is not deemed reliable, then a sleep inhibit determination unit 440 inhibits the power supply unit 180 from going to sleep. The structure allows a wireless communication system to effect a transition into power-saving mode upon acquiring necessary information, without making changes to existing standards.

Electronic braking system and method for drawbar trailers

A system and method for braking a drawbar trailer having a front axle and one or more further axles, each axle having at least two wheels, includes first sensors which sense the axle load of at least one axle, and second sensors which sense the rotational wheel speeds. Brakes actuatable with a pneumatic brake pressure brake the trailer. Brake signals generated in the towing vehicle are transmitted between the towing vehicle and the trailer. A control unit receives these brake signals and the sensor signals, and determines the axle load. The operating pressure is adapted to the brake pressure which is fed to the brakes. The control unit detects the brake pressure value as a function of (i) the specific axle loads of the front axle and the other axles and (ii) the received brake signals, and actuates the brakes such that the detected brake pressure is made available.

Method and system for processing overloaded keys of a mobile device

Improved approaches are disclosed for processing overloaded keys substantially more in accordance with user's expected behavior. With the improved approaches, users are less likely to undergo unexpected processing in response to overloaded key presses. In one embodiment, the processing ignores certain overloaded key presses and / or imposes delays to ensure that users have an opportunity to appreciate when an overloaded key has switched to another function. These approaches are particularly well suited for small scale mobile devices having reduced size displays and overloaded keys such as mobile phones (e.g., cellular phones), two-way pagers, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), or other two-way mobile communication devices.

User selectable hardware zoom in a video display system

A display controller system is controlled to provide a display surface zoom using hardware scaling from user input at the operating system, application program or hardware level. User input defining coordinates of a frame portion within a frame buffer memory is obtained, and a resolution of the zoom display device is determined. An aspect ratio of the zoom portion defined by the user input is adjusted to correspond to the zoom display device resolution. The display controller system is programmed to implement the display surface zoom to provide a full screen view of the zoom portion on the zoom display device. In the display controller system, the zoom portion of the frame buffer memory is scaled, converted into a display signal and output.
