Focused plenoptic camera employing microlenses with different focal lengths

Methods and apparatus for capturing and rendering images with focused plenoptic cameras employing microlenses with different focal lengths. A focused plenoptic camera that includes an array of microlenses with at least two different focal lengths may be used to simultaneously capture microimages from at least two different planes at different distances from the microlens array. Image operations such as refocusing and focus bracketing may be performed on flats captured with the camera. Images may be constructed from subsets of the microimages captured using each type of microlens, thus creating multiple images each focused at a different depth. An array of stacked microlenses including stacks that provide different focal lengths may be used. The lens stacks may be provided by stacking two microlenses arrays on top of each other in the camera.

Robust separation of speech signals in a noisy environment

A method for improving the quality of a speech signal extracted from a noisy acoustic environment is provided. In one approach, a signal separation process is associated with a voice activity detector. The voice activity detector is a two-channel detector, which enables a particularly robust and accurate detection of voice activity. When speech is detected, the voice activity detector generates a control signal. The control signal is used to activate, adjust, or control signal separation processes or post-processing operations to improve the quality of the resulting speech signal. In another approach, a signal separation process is provided as a learning stage and an output stage. The learning stage aggressively adjusts to current acoustic conditions, and passes coefficients to the output stage. The output stage adapts more slowly, and generates a speech-content signal and a noise dominant signal. When the learning stage becomes unstable, only the learning stage is reset, allowing the output stage to continue outputting a high quality speech signal.

Method for extracting features from an image using oriented filters

A method of analyzing machine vision images to identify low contrast features such as scratches or cracks on the polished ends of optical fibers. A bank of oriented filters having incremental angles of orientation are tuned to respond to the frequency characteristics of oriented scratches or cracks having an approximate width. The filters are applied to an image to generate a filter response image for each filter orientation. The set of filter response images are combined to form a single data set indicating a magnitude and angle for each pixel in the original image. Elements of the combined data set having corresponding angles and magnitudes are grouped to form contour components that can be optionally input to higher order processes.

Electrochromic Device with Self-forming Ion transfer Layer and Lithium Fluoro-Nitride Electrolyte

A method of preparing an electrochromic device involves forming multiple layers of selected materials on a substrate in a vacuum processing chamber. A first of these layers is an electrode layer deposited directly on the substrate and used for making contact to a subsequently deposited precursor film, preferably tungsten oxide, from which an electrochromic layer is formed by lithium loading in the presence of ionized nitrogen. This not only forms the electrochromic layer by diffusion of the lithium into the tungsten oxide, but also forms a thin lithium nitride ion transfer layer on the then exposed surface. Subsequently, a lithium fluoro-nitride electrolyte layer is formed on the ion transfer layer by evaporation from a lithium fluoride source in the presence of ionized nitrogen. An ion storage layer, which may be a vanadium oxide and a transparent second electrode layer are subsequently vacuum deposited.

Extraction and winterization of lipids from oilseed and microbial sources

A process for purifying a lipid composition having predominantly neutral lipid components having at least one long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid is disclosed. The process employs contacting the lipid composition with a polar solvent, such as acetone, wherein the solvent is selected such that the contaminants are less soluble in the solvent than in the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid. The process is typically conducted at cooler temperatures including about 0° C. Upon precipitation of the contaminants from the lipid composition, a separation is conducted to remove the precipitated material from the lipid composition. The long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids can include ARA, DPA, EPA and / or DHA. The process effectively winterizes lipid compositions, thereby reducing the tendency of such compositions to become hazy.

Method for fabricating metal interconnections

In the present method for fabricating metal interconnections, a Ni film is deposited on an insulating substrate by electroless plating, and a photoresist film is formed in a specified pattern on the Ni film. An Au film is deposited by electroless plating in a region where the Ni film is exposed and where the resist is not formed. The photoresist film is removed, and the Ni film exposed by the removal of the photoresist film is removed by etching. A Cu film is formed on the Au film by electroplating or electroless plating selectively. This method consists of only wet deposition process, involves less etching process and provides metal interconnections of low resistance.
