Filament loading system in an extrusion apparatus

An apparatus which extrudes flowable material from a liquifier includes a system for loading filament supplied in a cassette. The cassette is loaded into a loading bay of the apparatus. A strand of filament from the cassette is engaged and advanced along a path to the liquifier using a drive wheel or roller pair. A conduit having an entrance in the loading bay guides the filament as it is advanced. The filament loading system of the present invention provides a convenient manner of loading and unloading filament in a three-dimensional modeling machine, and can be implemented in a manner that protects the filament from environmental moisture.

Patterned electrospinning

A polymer is directed from a source electrode into an electric field that drives the formation of electrospun fibers that are deposited onto a collecting surface to thereby form a patterned polymer structure. The collecting surface can be a counterelectrode or a collecting surface that is between the source electrode and a counterelectrode. Apparatus employed to conduct the method include an electrospinning source that directs polymer into an electric field formed by source and counterelectrodes. A collecting surface, such as the counterelectrode or a surface interposed between the source and counterelectrodes, collects electrospun fibers. Articles of manufacture formed by the method of apparatus include, for example, a structure of patterned electrospun fibers comprising multiple aggregations of polymeric electrospun fibers.

Gum Manufacturing System with Loafing and Conditioning Features

Gum manufacturing machinery and method of manufacturing gum is illustrated in which a gum loafing machine generates loaves of finished gum that are then subsequently run through a gum conditioner to more uniformly set the temperature and viscosity of the gum material prior to further processing. Method for Forming Reinfoced Pultruded Profiles

A method and apparatus for forming a profile that contains at least one layer of continuous fibers and at least one layer of discontinuous fibers. Said method allowing the selective control of features to achieve a profile that has increased transverse strength and flexural modulus. The layer of continuous fibers may be formed from one or more continuous fiber reinforced ribbons (“CFRT”) (12) that contain fibers embedded within a thermoplastic polymer matrix, whereby a void fraction and in turn is minimized and flexural modulus is optimized Further, the ribbon (s) are consolidated so that the continuous fibers remain fixed in alignment in a substantially longitudinal direction (e.g., the direction of pultrusion). In addition to enhancing the tensile properties of the profile, the use of such ribbons also allows an improved handability when placing them into the desired position within the pultrusion die. The discontinuous fibers are also embedded within a thermoplastic matrix, in such a way as to assist in bonding of the layers to achieve the desired strength. At least a portion of the fibers are oriented in the transverse direction to provide increased transverse strength.
