An optical system that controls laser beam spot profile for forming a high performance thin film by a laser heat treatment process is provided. In the optical system that irradiates a rectangular laser beam on a film formed on a substrate, intensity distribution forming, apparatus makes the intensity distribution uniform in the longitudinal direction while maintaining the properties of the laser beam 2 such as directivity in the direction of shorter side, making it possible to concentrate the light to a limit permitted by the nature of the laser beam and achieve the maximum intensity gradient on the film disposed on the substrate. Thus a steep temperature distribution can be generated on the film disposed on the substrate and, as a result, high performance thin film can be formed.

The present wavelength multiplexed optical system includes a multimode optical fiber that transmits wavelength multiplexed optical signals and a plurality of multimode modal dispersion compensation optical fibers. The present invention relates to an optical component comprising an acceptance fibre, e.g. a photonic crystal fibre, for propagation of pump and signal light, a number of pump delivery fibres and a reflector element that reflects pump light from the pump delivery fibres into the acceptance fibre. A method for on-line optimization of fed-batch fermentation unit containing bacteria and nutrients is disclosed. Parameters of the fermenter model used in optimization calculations are estimated periodically to reduce the mismatch between the plant and the calculated values. The updated fermenter model is used to calculate the optimum sugar feed rate to maximize the product yield. The method/fermenter model is implemented as a software program in a PC that can be interfaced to plant control systems for on-line deployment in an actual plant environment. An on-line optimization system is useful to the plant operating personnel, to maximize the product yield from the fed-batch fermenter unit. In another aspect, a plant control system to control a fed-batch fermentation based on the described method is also disclosed.

A laser system for processing a workpiece includes a tunable pulsed laser source having an output comprising a set of optical pulses. The tunable pulsed laser source includes a seed source, an optical circulator having a first port coupled to the seed source, a second port, and a third port, a modulator driver, and an amplitude modulator coupled to the modulator driver. The tunable pulsed laser source also includes a first optical amplifier characterized by an input end and a reflective end and a second optical amplifier coupled to the third port of the optical circulator. The laser system also includes a controller configured to adjust laser parameters of the tunable pulsed laser source, a supporting member configured to support the workpiece, and an optical system configured to adjust laser beams from the tunable pulsed laser source and direct them towards the workpiece.

A tunable pulsed laser source comprising a seed source adapted to generate a seed signal and an optical circulator. The optical circulator includes a first port coupled to the seed source, a second port, and a third port. The laser source also includes an amplitude modulator characterized by a first side and a second side. The first side is coupled to the second port of the optical circulator. A cutting tool for a milling, drilling or turning machine has a body with a plurality of sides and a central opening. Each side has a perimeter along which cutting planes or edges are formed. Each side has at least two such cutting planes or edges. The planes may have a straight or curved profile, or a combination of straight and curved profiles along one side. The tool may have a plurality of such cutting planes formed along each side of the tool body. The cutting planes may be located at different levels in relation to each other, entering a work piece in sequence, or may be aligned to enter the work piece simultaneously. Preferably, the cutting planes are staggered in two directions—in a feeding direction and in a cutting direction. By dividing each surface being cut into a plurality of segments, the cutting tool creates a plurality of distinct shavings, or splinters that have shorter length in comparison with conventional splinters formed by indexable tips. Shorter cuts require less cutting force, which saves wear on the cutting tool and the machine. At the same time, the cuts can be made deeper and smoother when dividing the cutting surface into a plurality of segments.

A method and apparatus for improving the fatigue life of a wobblefram utilized in a micro switch. The flexible circular wobblefram can be formed with a fixed edge and a solid center region utilizing a punch and die at elevated temperatures. An external lever can be attached to the solid center region of the wobblefram. The lever can be loaded and actuated to transmit motion from outside of the micro switch to a sealed internal mechanism in order to perform a switching function. Circular and/or sinusoidal shaped corrugations can then be added to the wobblefram and evaluated for performance utilizing a finite element analysis (FEA) model. The FEA model can precisely evaluate and optimize profile, number and height of the circular and/or sinusoidal corrugations. Such a wobblefram with circular and/or sinusoidal corrugations can achieve higher lifetime without affecting the operating characteristics of the micro switch.

The invention relates to a locking device for the door of an apparatus comprising a rotary drum, and to a latch for one such device. The inventive device comprises a latch articulated to a moving leaf of the door, and a control box attached to a fixed frame of the door and configured to receive and immobilize the tip of the latch into a passage provided therein. The aforementioned tip acts primarily as a control tip. The latch comprises at least one second tip acting as a coupling tip which is spaced apart from the control tip and which is configured such that it can be coupled in a retaining stop that is attached to the fixed frame of the door in a position spaced apart from the passage in the control box.

In a method of fabricating complementary bipolar transistors with SiGe base regions the base regions of the NPN and PNP transistors are formed one after the other over two collector regions 20, 14 by epitaxial deposition of crystalline silicon-germanium layers 32a, 36a. A method of forming a seal ring structure includes the following steps. A substrate is provided, and the substrate includes a seal ring region. A metal stack is formed in the seal ring region.
