An electrode to form a hardfacing alloy for use as a surfacing on metal that is subjected to high thermal and mechanical stresses. The electrode includes chromium, a metal sensitization inhibitor, and iron to form a hardfacing alloy.

The present invention relates to a high-anticracking high-chrome cast iron type hardfacing flux-cored welding wire. Its flux core composition includes (by wt%) 43-70% of chromium carbide, 10-25% of ferrovanadium, 1-5% of 75# ferro-silicon, 3-8% of metal manganese, 1-3% of alumino-magnesium alloy, 2-5% of ferro-boron, 2-6% of ferro-titanium, 1-5% of ferro-niobium and 2-8% of ferro-molybdenum.

A hardfacing is provided to protect surfaces of drill bits and other downhole tools. The hardfacing may include tungsten carbide particles or pellets formed with an optimum weight percentage of binding material and dispersed within and bonded to a matrix deposit. The tungsten carbide particles may be formed by sintering or other appropriate techniques. The tungsten carbide particles may have generally spherical shapes, partially spherical shapes or non-spherical shapes.

A paint system and process are disclosed for hardfacing metal surfaces. In one embodiment of the process, a paint including a dispersion of hard particles is first applied as a coating to a surface. Next, a paint including a dispersion of a braze alloy is applied over the layer of hard particles. The surface is then heated to cause the braze alloy to melt and infiltrate into the hard particles thereby bonding them to the metallic surface. In another embodiment, a first layer of adhesive is applied, and a hardfacing powder is applied onto the adhesive. Then a second layer if adhesive is applied, and a braze alloy powder is applied onto the second adhesive. Then the material is heated as in the first embodiment. In another embodiment, paint containing hard particles is coated onto the substrate, and an acid-containing cross-linked copolymer in the paint is then neutralized to increase the viscosity of the paint to prevent running.

A drill bit having a bit body having at least one blade thereon, at least one cutter pocket disposed on the at least one blade, at least one cutter disposed in the at least one cutter pocket, hardfacing applied to at least a selected portion of the drill bit is shown and described. The hardfacing includes a first hardfacing layer disposed on the selected portion of the drill bit, a second hardfacing layer disposed on the first hardfacing layer, wherein the first hardfacing layer has a hardness different than a hardness of the second hardfacing layer.

A highly abrasive wear metal matrix composite hardfacing material for downhole tools is disclosed. The hardfacing material may comprise a matrix of a softer material with high hardness, such as amorphous nanocomposite steel alloys, and one or more hard component materials. The hard component materials may comprise sintered tungsten carbide, monocrystalline WC, polycrystalline WC, and the additional component of spherical cast tungsten carbide. Alternatively, a matrix of softer material, hard component materials and crushed cast tungsten carbide may be used.

A method of fabricating a machine component is provided. The method includes preparing at least a portion of a surface of a machine component for receiving a sintered preform. The method also includes forming a pre-sintered preform hybrid hardface mixture that includes combining a predetermined portion of at least one hardfacing material with a predetermined portion of at least one brazing material. The method further includes forming a pre-sintered preform. The pre-sintered preform has predetermined dimensions. The method also includes forming the sintered preform and positioning the sintered preform on the machine component. The method further includes fixedly coupling the sintered preform to at least a portion of the machine component via brazing.

A wire is adopted to hardfacing MIG-arc welding using a pure argon gas as a shielding gas. The wire is a flux-cored wire prepared through drawing a steel hoop or steel pipe as a sheath in which a flux is filled. Disclosed is a hardfacing alloy deriving its usefulness from carbides and borides of molybdenum and niobium. The alloy does not rely on chromium as an alloying agent. The hardfacing alloy is capable of being applied to a number of industrial substrates in a crack-free manner, and once applied convert the substrate to a wear- and abrasion-resistant material having an extended service life, even when subjected to harsh wear conditions.

An earth-boring drill bit having a bit body with a cutting component formed from a tungsten carbide composite material is disclosed. The composite material includes a binder and tungsten carbide crystals comprising sintered pellets. The composite material may be used as a hardfacing on the body and/or cutting elements, or be used to form portions or all of the body and cutting elements. The pellets may be formed with a single mode or multi-modal size distribution of the crystals.

A powder form of a hard phase component, selected from the group consisting of boron carbide, silicon carbide and a mixture of boron carbide and silicon carbide, is combined with an aluminum alloy matrix powder and applied to a metal substrate using plasma transferred arc (“PTA”) welding to produce a hardfaced structure having a wear-resisting carbide metal matrix composite overlay. A hardfacing machine is used for depositing a hardfacing alloy onto a metallic workpiece. An welding unit includes a wire feed system to supply wire to a welding head. A powder alloy feeding system includes a powder feed nozzle fluidly connected to an alloy powder supply. The welding head and powder feed nozzle move in a travel direction relative to the workpiece. The powder feed nozzle is positioned and oriented to feed a powder stream of alloy powder into a molten pool generated on the workpiece by an electrical arc produced by the welding head at a low temperature location behind the welding head relative to the travel direction. This alloy surfacing strategy limits vaporization of alloy elements by avoiding the high temperature region associated with the electrical arc.
