Round-shank bit for a coal cutting machine

A round-shank bit for a coal cutting machine or the like, having a bit head and a bit shank, wherein the bit head has a bit tip, maintained by a base element in a receptacle of the bit head. Starting at the base element, the bit tip tapers in a direction toward the free end of the bit tip, wherein the base element forms a maximum diameter of the bit tip, and wherein the bit tip has recesses on its outer contour. In order to assure good rotational behavior over the entire length of the operating time, the base element has the recesses on an outer circumference forming the maximum diameter.

Method of removing the growth substrate of a semiconductor light emitting device

A semiconductor structure formed on a growth substrate and including a light emitting layer disposed between an n-type region and a p-type region is attached to a carrier by a connection that supports the semiconductor structure sufficiently to permit removal of the growth substrate. In some embodiments, the semiconductor structure is a flip chip device. The semiconductor structure may be attached to the carrier by, for example, a metal bond that supports almost the entire lateral extent of the semiconductor structure, or by interconnects such as solder or gold stud bumps. An underfill material which supports the semiconductor structure is introduced in any spaces between the interconnects. The underfill material may be a liquid that is cured to form a rigid structure. The growth substrate may then be removed without causing damage to the semiconductor structure.

Modified Darrieus Vertical Axis Turbine

A lift-type turbine comprising at least three blades at circumferentially spaced positions is supported for rotation about a vertical axis. Each blade has an airfoil shape to generate a torque about the axis responsive to wind across the blades. A support comprising cables under tension is connected between adjacent ones of the blades to extend generally circumferentially about the turbine. Accordingly a minimum number of parts form the structure of the blades while minimizing the drag produced during rotation thereof due to the support members lying in a common circumferential path. The tension of the support members can support the blades in a pre-stressed condition to optimize the shape and performance thereof.
