The invention provides systems and methods for cooling and lubrication of high power density electric machines with an enhanced fluid injection system. Multiple fluid flow passages may be provided within the electric machine, which may include a stator fluid flow pathway between the stator and the machine housing. The stator fluid flow pathway may comprise one or more passages which may allow a fluid to directly contact the stator and the rotor. A method for cooling the electric machine may include directing a fluid to flow through one or more passages between the stator and the housing, which may provide the opportunity to transfer heat from the stator and the rotor to the fluid, thereby cooling the stator and the rotor.

The invention finds application in conjunction with, e.g., analytical instruments where low detection limits for gaseous vapors are desirable. Vapors sorbed and concentrated within the bed of the apparatus can be thermally desorbed achieving at least partial separation of vapor mixtures. The apparatus is suitable, e.g., for preconcentration and sample injection, and provides greater resolution of peaks for vapors within vapor mixtures, yielding detection levels that are 10-10,000 times better than for direct sampling and analysis systems. Features are particularly useful for continuous unattended monitoring applications.

The method comprises detecting when the internal combustion engine is idling and timing the injection of a first quantity of fuel to begin injection when the engine's piston is near top dead center; and controlling the temperature of exhaust gas to be above a predetermined temperature that is defined by an operating temperature range that achieves a desired conversion efficiency for the selective catalytic reduction converter, by: (a) timing injection of the gaseous fuel to begin after timing for injection the first quantity of fuel, and (b) increasing exhaust gas temperature by increasing a delay in timing for injecting the gaseous fuel, while limiting the delay to keep concentration of unburned fuel exiting the combustion chamber below a predetermined concentration.

The invention provides a structural principle wherein a combination fan-heatsink type cooling device transfers a large amount of heat into an ambient while producing minimal acoustic noise. The fan-heatsink has top and bottom cover members with a central power shaft between them, the shaft has fins that rotate around the shaft between the covers to move ambient. The ambient enters the fan-heatsink through inlets through the covers near the central power shaft and is forced out through louvers that make up the peripheral of the fan-heatsink housing. The fan-heatsink cooling device is positioned so that heat radiating from the heat source such as a chip enters the housing through the inlets near the central shaft and heat pipes are arranged to carry heat from the chip source to and through the louvers so that the ambient forced through the louvers absorbs heat transferred to the louvers at the place where it is immediately carried out of the fan-heatsink structure.

A heat conduction system including modular pipes housing a solid heat conductor made of a combination of carbon foam glass and grapheme and, for conductors, insulated from the outermost pipe by an insulating layer and with an annular gas purging gap for high-temperature applications. Also included in the system are thermal valves, manifolds, and heat exchangers to route and use the thermal energy. In an exemplary use, a down-hole heat exchanger, thermally coupled to a string of heat conduction modules, brings geothermal heat up from abandoned oil wells to operate a boiler and steam turbine.
