Chemically stabilized beta-cristobalite and ceramic bodies comprising same

A method for rigidifying a fiber-based paper substrate for use in the exhaust system of a combustion device. In the method, a green ceramic fiber-based paper substrate is impregnated with an impregnating dispersion. The impregnated substrate is then dried, calcined and fired to form a rigidified substrate that is suitable for use in the exhaust system of a combustion device. This rigidification process is performed at least once and, preferably, two or more times. The green paper substrate comprises two or more sheets of green ceramic fiber-based paper, with at least one creased sheet and another sheet being a laminated together to form a plurality of tubular channels. The rigidified substrate comprises refractory ceramic fibers in the form of a ceramic fiber-based paper and agglomerates of ceramic particles. The ceramic particle agglomerates are bonded to and disposed so as to thereby bond together the refractory ceramic fibers at spaced locations along and at intersections of the refractory ceramic fibers so that the refractory ceramic fibers retain much of their original flexibility while in the paper.

A modular barrier includes a plurality of substantially identical barrier sections each section having a base portion surmounted by an upright portion. The upright portion has projections with substantially semi-cylindrical outer surfaces at its ends. Correspondingly shaped recesses are also provided. At a femal end, the base portion includes a nose. The surface of the nose is a surface of rotation of the profile of the base portion. At the male end, the base portion includes a correspondingly shaped cavity. The first and second projections and the nose are provided with bores. When the female end of the barrier section is brought up to a male end of a similar, adjacent barrier section, the projections mate with one another and the nose is received in the cavity of the adjacent barrier section. A hinge pin may then be passed through the bores for allowing one barrier section to be articulated to an adjacent barrier section with the joint between the two portions of adjacent barrier sections presenting an essentially smooth profile irrespective of the angle between the two adjacent barrier sections.

Multi-beam laser spot welding of coated steels

A method of laser spot welding a workpiece stack-up (10) that includes at least two overlapping steel workpieces (12, 14, 150) is disclosed. The method includes directing a plurality of laser beams (24, 24′, 24″) at the top surface (20) of the workpiece stack-up to create a molten steel weld pool (92) that penetrates into the stack-up. The molten steel weld pool is then grown to penetrate further into the stack-up by increasing an overall combined irradiance of the laser beams while reducing the total projected sectional area (88) of the laser beams at a plane of the top surface of the workpiece stack-up. Increasing the overall combined irradiance of the laser beams may be accomplished by moving the focal points (66, 66′, 66″) of the laser beams closer to the top surface or by reducing the mean angle of incidence (86) of the laser beams so as to reduce the eccentricity of the individual projected sectional areas of the laser beams.
