This process and invention may be used for “live” (on-line, recorded, real-time, or transmitted) stereoscopic image generation, post-production, and viewing to ensure the imagery, from the cameras through the systems to the final screens, maintains an acceptable level of viewer comfort and actively causes an action if an image becomes “uncomfortable” to view. The invention will use image-processing hardware and software to monitor stereoscopic 3D image data, and will generate an output response based on qualifying the imagery. The output responses include generating an alarm to alert technical crew members to a “discomfort” condition so they may take corrective action. The alarm may be an audio or visual alert, and warn of the type of discomfort detected. The alarm condition may trigger the automatic control of a video switching device, which would immediately route an appropriate “comfortable” input source to the output. The alarm condition may duplex a single camera or playback signal into an identical stereo pair, which will be 2D, but will be comfortable to view.

Methods and systems for wide dynamic range display are presented. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving a Color Filter Array (CFA) pixel signal, computing, using image processing hardware, an adaptation factor for the CFA pixel signal, the adaptation factor having a global factor component and a local factor component, and computing, using the image processing hardware, an adapted pixel signal for the CFA pixel in response to a reverse exponential function featuring the adaptation factor. In one embodiment, computing the adapted pixel signal for the CFA pixel does not require frame memory. Also, the adaptation factor may have a value between 0 and 1, in certain embodiments.

Method for implementing error diffusion process with memory management

A method for implementing error diffusion process with memory management is disclosed to separate several small blocks in one image that needs to be error diffused. The size of every small block is smaller than the internal static random access memory (SRAM) size. When doing error diffusion on one small block, the pixels located at the edge of the block that cannot be diffused are reserved in the SRAM or the dynamic random access memory (DRAM). When doing error diffusion on the next block, the previous reserved pixels are reused. These steps are repeated to process all the blocks until the whole image is finished with error diffusion. This method can reduce external DRAM access times, use smaller internal SRAM sizes and improve the performance of the image process hardware.

The invention discloses an image processing method for enhancing image border resolution, and the method provided by the invention comprises the following steps: converting an image into an image layer; removing the noise from the image layer by using a bidirectional filter and generating an image layer with high resolution ratio; grading the image layer with high resolution ratio by using a sharpen filter, removing the inhomogeneous edge of the image layer with high resolution ratio and generating a sharpen image layer; and reinserting the sharpen image layer by using a reinserting filter and generating an image layer with high resolution. There is provided a system and technique for generating holograms using standard image processing hardware with reduce computational complexity. In one aspect, there is provided a holographic image display system comprising a processor receiving image data at an input and producing output hologram data based on the image data, wherein the image data comprises three-dimensional image data that is separable into a plurality of two-dimensional image layers at different image planes, and wherein the processor is configured to: a) perform a space-frequency transform, such as a Fourier transform on each image layer to provide a transformed image layer, b) apply a focus factor to each transformed image layer, c) apply a pseudo-random phase factor to each transformed image layer, and d) sum the transformed image layers to form a holographic sub-frame, e) repeat steps (c) and (d) for a plurality of iterations, applying a different pseudo-random phase factor to the transformed image layers in each iteration to form a plurality of holographic sub-frames, the output hologram data comprising the plurality of holographic sub-frames; and f) drive a spatial light modulator with the holographic sub-frames in rapid temporal succession to generate a holographic image. By applying a pseudo-random phase factor to each image layer after it has been transformed, a large number of holographic sub-frames can be generated without the need to perform a Fourier transform for each sub-frame.

The method mainly comprises the steps of transformation from a quadrilateral pixel image to a hexagonal pixel image, morphological transformation, canny detection and convex hull detection. The step of converting quadrilateral pixels into hexagonal structure pixels comprises the following steps: determining the center coordinates of the hexagonal pixels according to the column number of hexagonal pixel blocks, calculating the average pixel intensity of the hexagonal pixels, and carrying out iterative calculation based on the coordinate relationship corresponding to the hexagonal pixels and the quadrilateral pixels and the corresponding pixel relationship. Morphological optimization is performed on the obtained hexagonal structure image by using open-close filtering operation, a two-dimensional Gaussian filtering function is constructed to perform filtering and noise reduction again, the pixel gradient of the image is calculated to perform non-maximum suppression on the image, edge points are detected and connected by using a dual-threshold method, and convex hull detection is used to exclude non-boundary points in the connected region. According to the improved edge detection method provided by the invention, complete and connected image edge information can be accurately and quickly obtained on the basis of traditional image processing hardware, and noise is suppressed while the fineness of image edge details is kept.
