The invention relates to a microfabricated device for the rapid detection of DNA, proteins or other molecules associated with a particular disease. The devices and methods of the invention can be used for the simultaneous diagnosis of multiple diseases by detecting molecules (e.g. amounts of molecules), such as polynucleotides (e.g., DNA) or proteins (e.g., antibodies), by measuring the signal of a detectable reporter associated with hybridized polynucleotides or antigen / antibody complex. In the microfabricated device according to the invention, detection of the presence of molecules (i.e., polynucleotides, proteins, or antigen / antibody complexes) are correlated to a hybridization signal from an optically-detectable (e.g. fluorescent) reporter associated with the bound molecules. These hybridization signals can be detected by any suitable means, for example optical, and can be stored for example in a computer as a representation of the presence of a particular gene. Hybridization probes can be immobilized on a substrate that forms part of or is exposed to a channel or channels of the device that form a closed loop, for circulation of sample to actively contact complementary probes. Universal chips according to the invention can be fabricated not only with DNA but also with other molecules such as RNA, proteins, peptide nucleic acid (PNA) and polyamide molecules.

Drain cover for generally open flat drainage areas with debris blockage and open drainage portions

A drain cover having a main drainage surface with relatively larger apertures or openings therein, comprising generally 50 percent of the surface, so that larger debris is accepted into a related drain pipe when a depending skirt portion of the drain cover, having smaller perforations, becomes clogged. In this way a two-layer drainage system for a generally flat surface is provided that allows draining of water and small particulates alone when possible, but upon the clogging of the smaller openings the generally flat surface can be protected from flooding by allowing larger particulates to drain into the main drainage surface. The main drainage surface is held above the flat surface by the depending skirt, at a level of ⅜ to 1 inch above the flat surface. When the depending skirt openings are clogged the water and debris will rise until allowed to drain into the larger openings of the main drainage surface.

Heated Graphite Scrubber to Reduce Interferences in Ozone Monitors

The present invention provides a means of greatly reducing interferences from mercury vapor, UV-absorbing compounds and water vapor in the measurement of ozone by UV absorbance. A heated graphite scrubber destroys greater than 99% of ozone passing through it while reducing biases from typical atmospheric UV-absorbing interferents by large factors compared to conventional ozone scrubbers. Substitution of a heated graphite scrubber in place of traditional ozone scrubbers such as hopcalite, metal oxides and heated silver scrubbers, results in a more accurate measurement of ozone by reducing the responses to UV-absorbing interferences and water vapor. The heated graphite scrubber also may be used in combination with other ozone sensors, such as electrochemical and HMOS sensors, to provide a reference measurement with ozone selectively removed and thus greatly reduce contributions from interfering species in those measurement devices as well.
