63 results about "Mud logging" patented technology

Mud logging is the creation of a detailed record (well log) of a borehole by examining the cuttings of rock brought to the surface by the circulating drilling medium (most commonly drilling mud). Mud logging is usually performed by a third-party mud logging company. This provides well owners and producers with information about the lithology and fluid content of the borehole while drilling. Historically it is the earliest type of well log. Under some circumstances compressed air is employed as a circulating fluid, rather than mud. Although most commonly used in petroleum exploration, mud logging is also sometimes used when drilling water wells and in other mineral exploration, where drilling fluid is the circulating medium used to lift cuttings out of the hole. In hydrocarbon exploration, hydrocarbon surface gas detectors record the level of natural gas brought up in the mud. A mobile laboratory is situated by the mud logging company near the drilling rig or on deck of an offshore drilling rig, or on a drill ship.

System, method and apparatus for mud-gas extraction, detection and analysis thereof

The application of a gas analyzer for gas mud logging is presented to measure gases in the return mud flow used in drilling processes. A supported membrane extraction probe from the analyzer is inserted into the mud flow. The probe extracts target gases from the mud through the membrane. Extracted gases are transported by an internal pump to an internal gas sensor unit. The infrared sensor unit is utilized to subject the gases to infrared emitted energy to excite the gasses at a molecular level for sensing and detection. The sensor then transfers sensed values electronically to a digital conditioning board. As the data is digitized in the conditioning board it is encoded with information to enable a means of correlating the derived sensor data. The data is then sent to a digital wireless transceiver for transport to a remote receiving transceiver connected to a microprocessor for data logging.

Fast mud gas logging using tandem mass spectroscopy

Systems and methods for high speed mud gas logging are described. A general workflow of mud gas logging uses tandem mass spectroscopy. The workflow involves first separating the volatile components of the hydrocarbons (typically C8 and below) from the drilling fluid using a fluid extractor (or degaser). Extracted gases are then diluted in air and transported to an analyzer, which measures the concentration of each of those gases in air. A tandem mass spectroscopy-based analyzer is used that is able to quantify each of those hydrocarbon components, including resolving isomeric species, while tolerating the presence of the non-hydrocarbons. According to some embodiments, triple quadrapole mass spectroscopy is used.
