A system and a method of performing a frameless image-guided biopsy uses imaging, a six-dimensional robotic couch system, a laser guidance system, an optical distance indicator, and a needle control apparatus. A planning CT scan is made of the patient with stereotactic fiduciary markers to localize and produce digitally reconstructed radiographs. Two stereoscopic images are generated using an imaging device to visualize and identify a target tumor. The images are fused with the digitally reconstructed radiographs of the planning CT scan to process tumor location. The tumor location data are communicated to the movable robotic couch to position the target tumor of the patient at a known isocenter location. A biopsy needle is guided with a laser alignment mechanism towards the isocenter at the determined depth using a needle positioning apparatus and an Optical Distance Indicator, and a biopsy sample of the target tumor is obtained.

A coating system and method for reducing the tendency for hydrocarbon fluids, such as fuels and oils, to form carbonaceous deposits that adhere to a wall of a containment article. Of particular concern are carbonaceous deposits that form at temperatures below about 650° F. (about 345° C.). The coating system combines an outermost layer of platinum with a ceramic barrier layer. The coating system significantly reduces the formation of carbonaceous deposits and the adhesion of such deposits. To further reduce wall and hydrocarbon fluid temperatures and formation of carbonaceous deposits, the coating system is preferably applied to the surface of the wall wetted by the fluid, as well as the opposite surface of the wall exposed to a surrounding environment. The outermost layers serve as radiation shields to reduce heat transfer from the surrounding environment to the wall, and from the wall to the hydrocarbon fluid.

By selecting a particular size and geometry for the voids, metallic films can be provided which have an enhanced photon-to-plasmon conversion efficiency for incident radiation of a predetermined wavelength. Controllable surface-enhanced absorption and emission characteristics may thus be provided, which are useful for SERS and potentially also other optical spectrometry and filtering applications. With such a large Raman signal, the invention enables fast, compact and inexpensive Raman spectrometers to be provided opening up many new application possibilities.
