Targeted and high density drug loaded polymeric materials

Polymeric delivery devices have been developed which combine high loading / high density of molecules to be delivered with the option of targeting. As used herein, “high density” refers to microparticles having a high density of ligands or coupling agents, which is in the range of 1000-10,000,000, more preferably between 10,000 and 1,000,000 ligands per square micron of microparticle surface area. A general method for incorporating molecules into the surface of biocompatible polymers using materials with an HLB of less than 10, more preferably less than 5, such as fatty acids, has been developed. Because of its ease, generality and flexibility, this method has widespread utility in modifying the surface of polymeric materials for applications in drug delivery and tissue engineering, as well other other fields. Targeted polymeric microparticles have also been developed which encapsulate therapeutic compounds such as drugs, cellular materials or components, and antigens, and have targeting ligands directly bound to the microparticle surface. Preferred applications include use in tissue engineering matrices, wound dressings, bone repair or regeneration materials, and other applications where the microparticles are retained at the site of application or implantation. Another preferred application is in the use of microparticles to deliver anti-proliferative agents to the lining of blood vessels following angioplasty, transplantation or bypass surgery to prevent or decrease restenosis, and in cancer therapy. In still another application, the microparticles are used to treat or prevent macular degeneration when administered to the eye, where agents such as complement inhibitors are administered.

Indwelling heat exchange heat pipe catheter and method of using same

A catheter is adapted to exchange heat with a body fluid, such as blood, flowing in a body conduit, such as a blood vessel. The catheter includes a shaft with a heat exchange region disposed at its distal end. This region may include at least one balloon which is adapted to receive a remotely cooled heat exchange fluid preferably flowing in a direction counter to that of the body fluid. Embodiments including multiple balloons enhance the surface area of contact, and the mixing of both the heat exchange and the body fluid. The catheter can be positioned to produce hypothermia in a selective area of the body without cooling the entire body system. It is of particular advantage in brain surgeries where stroke, trauma or cryogenic tumors can best be addressed under hypothermic conditions. Heat pipe technology can be used to form a heat pipe heat exchange catheter. The heat pipe heat exchange catheter includes metallic bellows which allow for flexibility. The temperature control source can be portable to enable the heat pipe heat exchange catheter to be used in the ambulatory environment.

Percutaneous implant for limb salvage

A percutaneous implant device is biologically attached to bone and soft tissue of a broken limb or amputated limb without longitudinal or lateral movement. Bone and soft tissue in-growth are promoted. The percutaneous implant device has a bio-compatible metal alloy stem member, having an integral tapered fluted section designed to fit into a taper reamed bone canal. A precisely dimensioned cylindrical central core cooperates with a suture ring and an external extension member, facilitating attachment of the percutaneous implant device to a hand or foot prosthesis. A porous metal outer body having a female taper at one end and the capacity to promote growth of bone and soft tissue, is press fitted on the central core contacting suture ring. The assembled implant is inserted into a taper reamed bone cavity until the male taper-reamed bone free end contacts the female taper. Soft skin is extended over the outer surface of the porous metal outer body and the surrounding suture ring.

Slatwall extrusion and assembly

The present invention pertains to a slatwall extrusion and assembly for a wall of a building to support hangers and shelving and the items they carry. Each section of slatwall has a continuous linear rear wall that integrally joins number of spaced boards. Each board has front, rear, top and bottom walls that form a continuous loop around a hollow interior. Each board also has a downwardly extending double-walled lip. The lip is spaced from its adjacent lower board to form an L-shaped slot. The continuous rear wall is firmly secured to the studs or drywall of the wall by self tapping screws or an adhesive coating. The linear rear wall, hoop shaped boards, and double-walled lips combine to form a sturdy, lightweight and inexpensive slatwall extrusion. High impact polystyrene (HIPS) is used to achieve even further cost and weight reductions while maintaining the strength of the slatwall extrusion and assembly.

A jig having particularly advantageous application in the construction of custom spiral staircases. The jig for bending a wooden board comprises: a trunk; and, multiple arms each arm having an inner end portion releasably attached to the trunk and an outer arm portion adapted to removably attach the wooden board thereto. When the wooden board is attached to the outer end portions of the arms the wooden board will have bent to conform to a curve defined by the end portions of the arms as it extends up, and around the trunk. Most preferably the trunk and arms comprise cylindrical tubes. The arm portions which attach to the trunk comprise split cylinders which may be lockably squeezed over the trunk with a bolt. Each arm comprises an inner cylindrical tube which closely and lockingly slides within an outer cylindrical tube so that the outer end portion of the arm may be locked at a selected radius from the trunk so that the jig may be used to bend boards at varying radiuses.

Rare earth element-doped oxide precursor with silicon nanocrystals

A method is provided for forming a rare earth element-doped silicon oxide (SiO2) precursor with nanocrystalline (nc) Si particles. In one aspect the method comprises: mixing Si particles into a first organic solvent, forming a first solution with a first boiling point; filtering the first solution to remove large Si particles; mixing a second organic solvent having a second boiling point, higher than the first boiling point, to the filtered first solution; and, fractionally distilling, forming a second solution of nc Si particles. The Si particles are formed by immersing a Si wafer into a third solution including hydrofluoric (HF) acid and alcohol, applying an electric bias, and forming a porous Si layer overlying the Si wafer. Then, the Si particles are mixed into the organic solvent by depositing the Si wafer into the first organic solvent, and ultrasonically removing the porous Si layer from the Si wafer.
