Lubricant cooled integrated motor/compressor design

A compressor system according to the present invention utilizes direct rotational input from a permanent magnet motor to generate compressed air. The permanent magnet motor is mounted directly to an air screw compressor. The rotational input is provided by the permanent magnet motor to the air screw compressor without a gear train. The permanent magnet motor and associated variable speed drive controls the rotational speed of the permanent magnet motor and hence the screw compressor. Differing motors may selectively mount, and provide rotational input to, the air screw compressor.

Air bearing for use as a seal

In order to effect a seal; a porous material which comprises one side of two opposing surfaces is used to restrict and evenly distribute externally pressurized gas, liquid, steam, etc. between the two surfaces, exerting a force which is opposite the forces from pressure differences or springs trying to close the two faces together and so may create a non contact seal that is more stable and reliable than hydrodynamic seals currently in use.

As the traffic volume carried by telecommunication networks has been rapidly increased as a result of the bandwidth-intensive applications such as Internet access, electronic commerce, multimedia applications, and distributed computing, it is imperative to utilize the optical network for backbone, metropolitan, and local area networks. The optical networks employing optical fibers as the transmission medium have exhibited a superior performance / cost ratio for both long-haul and short-haul routes and the emerging dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) / all-optical networks have shown a promising potential to improve speed, capacity and connectivity of optical telecommunication networks. The present invention provides Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Waveguide Switch (MOEM-WS) by integrating MEMS actuators and micromachined PLCs on the same substrate. The MOEM-WS is an integrated hybrid microsystem: Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical System (MOEMS) and it is particularly applicable for optical cross-connect (OXC) switches and optical add / drop multiplexers (OADM). The MOEM-WS can provide an essential fiber switching capability for DWDM / all-optical networks with numerous accompanying benefits such as low cost, small crosstalk, reliability, compactness, high speed, reconfigurability, modularity, scalability, and insensitiveness to signal wavelength and polarization.

Optical module

In optical module 10, light emitted from laser diode (hereinafter referred to as “LD”) 42 is collimated into parallel light beam by ball lens 44 and then travels through ball lens 26 to be focused on core 104 of optical fiber 100. Since the light passing between ball lenses 44 and 26 is the parallel light beam as described above, allowance is enlarged for axial misalignment between the optical axes of ball lens 44 and ball lens 26. This enables the light from LD 42 to be focused on core 102 of optical fiber 100 even if there occurs axial misalignment between the optical axes of optical fiber 100 and LD 42 due to a factor resulting from fitting of ferrule 102 into sleeve 14 or the like. Accordingly, there is no need for alignment in a work of mounting optoelectronic device 28, i.e., LD 42 in housing 12.

Magnetic head having write head with helical coil and method for fabrication thereof

The present invention is a magnetic head having a helical induction coil and includes hard disk drive devices that utilize the magnetic head. The helical coil is fabricated around a magnetic pole yoke in a series of process steps that include a reactive ion etch (RIE) process step which is utilized to simultaneously form vertical interconnect vias and upper helical coil member trenches. Thereafter, in a single fabrication step, such as by electroplating, the vertical interconnect lines and the upper helical coil traces are created in a single fabrication step, such that they are integrally formed. The vertical interconnect lines provide an electrical connection between outer ends of previously formed lower helical coil traces and outer ends of the integrally formed upper helical coil traces, such that a helical coil is fabricated. In the preferred embodiment, the helical coil is composed of copper.

Lateral PNP transistor and the method of manufacturing the same

The present invention relates to a lateral PNP transistor and the method of manufacturing the same. The medium doping N-type base area and the light doping P− collector area were first introduced in the structure before the formation of P+ doping emitter area and the collector area. The emitter-base-collector doping profile in the lateral and the base width of LPNP were similar to NPN. The designer can optimize the doping profile and area size of each area according to the request of the current gain (Hfe), collector-base breakdown voltage (BVceo), and early voltage (VA) of LPNP transistor. These advantages may cause to reduce the area and enhance performance of the LPNP transistor.
