Apparatus and method for performing fast fibre channel write operations over relatively high latency networks

A method and apparatus to improve the performance of a SCSI write over a high latency network. The apparatus includes a first Switch close to the initiator in a first SAN and a second Switch close to the target in a second SAN. In various embodiments, the two Switches are border switches connecting their respective SANs to a relatively high latency network between the two SANs. In addition, the initiator can be either directly connected or indirectly connected to the first Switch in the first SAN. The target can also be either directly or indirectly connected to the second Switch in the second SAN. During operation, the method includes the first Switch sending Transfer Ready (Xfr_rdy) frame(s) based on buffer availability to the initiating Host in response to a SCSI Write command from the Host directed to the target. The first and second Switches then coordinate with one another by sending Transfer Ready commands to each other independent of the target's knowledge. The second switch buffers the data received from the Host until the target indicates it is ready to receive the data. Since the Switches send frames to the initiating Host independent of the target, the Switches manipulate the OX_ID and RX_ID fields in the Fibre Channel header of the various commands associated with the SCSI Write. The OX_ID and RX_ID fields are manipulated so as to trap the commands and so that the Switches can keep track of the various commands associated with the SCSI write.

Three-Dimensional Microfabricated Bioreactors with Embedded Capillary Network

In an aspect, the present invention uses projection micro stereolithography to generate three-dimensional microvessel networks that are capable of supporting and fostering growth of a cell population. For example, provided is a method of making a microvascularized bioreactor via layer-by-layer polymerization of a photocurable liquid composition with repeated patterns of illumination, wherein each layer corresponds to a layer of the desired microvessel network. The plurality of layers are assembled to make a microvascular network. Support structures having different etch rates than the structures that make up the network provides access to manufacturing arbitrary geometries that cannot be made by conventional methods. A cell population is introduced to the external wall of the network to obtain a microvascularized bioreactor. Provided are various methods and related bioreactors, wherein the network wall has a permeability to a biological material that varies within and along the network.

Method of administering call handover between cells in a communications system

A communications system 1 includes an underlay network 2, which a cellular communications network implemented using UMTS technology, and an overlay home cell 8 set up by a user using a base station router 7, or other similar access device. A call may be transferred from the home cell 8 to a cell of the underlay network 2 and vice versa. If these operate at different tariffs, the user may find that handover between them results in extra charges for an on-going call. The user terminal 10 is enabled so as to allow the user to determine if handover should be performed, and thus retain control of costs incurred in making a call. The user terminal 10 may give an alert if there is a risk of imminent handover, allowing the user to take avoiding action if desired, or the user may configure preferences to control under what conditions handover may be performed.

Distributed client/server computer network

A distributed client / server computer network wherein the identity of at least one complex image, selected from a plurality of complex images stored by a client, is transmitted to a remote server. The remote server then determines, from the identity of the or each image selected, whether the client is authorised to gain access, via the server, to a particular network resource. The network is thus efficient, as the complex images themselves do not need to be transmitted from the client to the server, and secure, as no authorization information is stored by the client.

Junction Adaptive Reactive Routing (JARR) Protocol for Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks in a City Environment

The routing protocol was designed for VANET in a city environment. The main objective is finding not only the shortest but the most efficient path for a packet to reach its destination. Packets are routed through the fastest paths as opposed to the shortest. Fastest path is defined as the quickest time for a packet to reach a destination irrespective of distance. While the shortest path is still considered, the routing protocol adapts to the network conditions and performs routing reactively. Making use of the city topology, packets are routed from junctions to junctions. This means that routing decisions are made when a packet arrives at a junction, to decide which path to take next in order to reach the next junction. This process continues until the packet reaches its destination.

Transport of aggregated client packets

The invention relates to a method for transmitting one or more client signals via a packet transport network. According to the method, packets of the one or more client signals are received at an ingress node of the network. Timing information characterizing the timing of the received packets is determined and the received packets are mapped into a container. The container and the timing information are transmitted via the network. At an egress node of the network, the packets are extracted from the container and the packets are timed for further transmission based on the transmitted timing information.

Media gateway connection information recovery

In a packet-based telephony network, a media gateway provides information on active media path connections to an active call server. For instance, this data may be provided to a backup call server to keep the backup call server in a warm standby mode. The backup call server polls a media gateway to retrieve a table of information on active media path connections. The polling may be done periodically or only during switchover from the active call server to the backup call server. After switchover, the backup call server has all necessary details about active media path connections to provide accurate billing information. Alternatively, after a temporary failure at the active call server, the active call server may send a request to the media gateway to retrieve a table of information on active media path connections.

Admission control method

The invention is related to radio resource usage in cellular telecommunication systems, more accurately to admission control methods used in establishing of new connections. In a method according to the invention, a bearer request is checked with two different tests before it is admitted or rejected. A test of a first kind is used for overall control, i.e. all bearers are treated in a roughly similar way. A test of a second kind is used for controlling bearers, which present a high load to the network. A bearer request must then pass a combination of a test of the first kind and a test of the second kind in order to be admitted. A two-part test according to the invention is able to efficiently handle both even and skewed traffic.
