A method of designing a PSS (Power System Stabilizer) based on wide-area multi-signal input hierarchical control includes the following steps: (1) using a high-precision identification algorithm to directly derive a precise low-order linear model of a system through field measurement data or nonlinear time-domain simulation; (2) selecting multiple wide-area signals with strong observability and controllability from the whole system as the feedback input of controllers; (3) implementing hierarchical control; (4) designing a different fixed time delay compensation link for each mode in order to eliminate the influence of the time delay of the wide-area signals on the control effect; and (5) superposing signals output by mode controllers and taking the superposed signal as final control output of a PSS based on wide-area multi-signal input hierarchical control. The method has the following advantages: (1) an optimal damping effect can be achieved with minimum control cost; (2) the PSS has a better control effect and higher robustness than the traditional controller, and is beneficial to engineering practice; (3) a better control effect can be achieved; and (4) the overall control effect is better.

Disclosed is a structural vibration damping device, which comprises a piezoelectric element adapted to be mounted on a structure, a shunt circuit inserted between two electrodes of the piezoelectric element, and an electric circuit for selectively opening and closing the shunt circuit. In this damping device, the electric circuit is operable, when a voltage between the electrodes of the piezoelectric element has a positive or negative extreme value due to a vibration of the structure, to close the shunt circuit so as to allow a current to flow between the electrodes of the piezoelectric element, and, when the current is reduced to zero, to open the shunt circuit so as to preclude the current flow until a voltage between the electrodes of the piezoelectric element subsequently has the extreme value. Further, each of the shunt circuit and the electric circuit is designed to be operated using only a power generated by the piezoelectric element. The damping device of the present invention makes it possible to achieve high-performance power-free damping with enhanced reliability and maintainability.
