A closed loop shift control apparatus and method based on estimated torque in friction elements controls a torque transfer phase when shifting from a low gear configuration to a high gear configuration for an automatic transmission system. When pressure actuated friction elements are selectively engaged and released to establish torque flow paths in the transmission, estimates of torsional load exerted on the off-going friction element are used to predict the optimal off-going friction element release timing for achieving a consistent shift feel. The estimated torque is preferably calculated by using estimated torque signals generated as a function of speed measurements represented either the engine speed and turbine output speed or transmission output speed and wheel speed under dynamically changing conditions.

A method and system for controlling an automatic transmission is disclosed. The method and system include obtaining positioning data using a global positioning satellite (GPS) and monitoring the automatic transmission to obtain transmission data. The method and system also include learning whether performance of the automatic transmission can be improved utilizing the positioning data and the transmission data. A pulse width modulated (PWM) valve-based hydraulic control system is disclosed. In one embodiment, a feedback control system includes a controller that receives a pressure command signal and a pressure feedback signal. The controller generates a duty cycle control signal that controls a PWM valve. The PWM valve provides a control pressure Pc to control a load, such as an actuator of an automatic transmission system. A pressure sensor measures the control pressure Pc and provides the pressure feedback signal. In another embodiment, a compensator provides compensation for linear and nonlinear effects in the pressure feedback signal, based at least in part, on other inputs, such as fluid temperature. In other embodiments, a plurality of controllers are provided, and a controller is selected by a switching logic processor, or by phase-in and phase-out filters, based on the pressure feedback signal and other inputs. The re-calibration method updates the feedback control system processes to maintain performance despite variations due to wear, temperature, and other factors.

A low leak pressure control actuator for, e.g., controlling pressure in an automatic transmission system, includes a poppet and a check ball slidably disposed within a housing. The poppet and check ball are movable between a de-energized configuration, plural partially energized configurations, and a fully energized configuration. In the de-energized configuration, the poppet and check ball prohibit all flow to and from the supply port and permit flow between the control port and the exhaust port. In the partially energized configurations, the poppet and check ball permit flow to and from all of the ports, and incremental changes in the internal displacement of the poppet produce incremental changes in a control pressure. In the fully energized configuration flow, the poppet and check ball prohibit all flow to the exhaust port and permit fluid flow between the supply port and the control port.
