Reducing concentration of organic materials with substituted cyclodextrin compound in polyester packaging materials

Volatile organic compound or other materials are produced in the thermoplastic manufacture of thermoplastic polyester beverage containers. Such materials can be eluted into beverages such as carbonated beverages, sparkling or still water from the polyester. Such thermoplastic polyester resins can be manufactured with a substituted cyclodextrin material that can prevent the formation of, or react with, and absorb volatile by-products during the formation of thermoplastic preforms or containers from the thermoplastic pellet or chip. Further, as the preform is blown into a polyester container, the active materials of the invention prevent the generation of additional undesirable volatile materials. Lastly, the scavenger material can act as a barrier that prevents transport of materials from the exterior of the container into the container contents.

Packaging Material Such as Film, Fiber, Woven and Nonwoven Fabric with Adsorbancy

The invention relates to compositions that can be used to adsorb low concentration, preferably, for example less than 15 ppm, of unwanted or target substances. Typically the absorbance can be from an enclosed vapor phase. Such absorbency is accomplished in a contained substantially enclosed gaseous volume or atmosphere using a composition comprising a cyclodextrin compound and a polyethylenimine that can have an absorbency capability for low concentrations of unwanted or target substances. Such absorbency can be obtained with thermoplastic materials used in the form of bulk polymer or a film, fiber, web, woven fabric, nonwoven fabric, sheet, packaging and other such structures including or surrounding the enclosed volume. The adsorbent of the invention is typically used in the context of an enclosed volume, also known as an enclosed ambient vapor phase that contains the adsorbent of the invention and the unwanted or target substances at a concentration that is not desirable. The concentration should be reduced to non-offensive sensed limits or a limit that does not produce a biological response.

Room temperature stable, non-gelling polysaccharide solutions such as agaroses, dextrans and cyclodextrans are made by the present invention. It has been found that by incorporating certain gel-inhibiting additives into an aqueous polysaccharide solution, the gel point is reduced or eliminated and the solution remains liquid at room temperature indefinitely. Additives that have been found to work include salts, such as lithium chloride and zinc chloride and bases, such as sodium hydroxide and lithium hydroxide. Mixtures of said salts and said bases can also be used with the same desired results. The composition of these solutions of the present idea can be further modified to include other additives, such as organic co-solvents or non-solvents, pH modifiers, surfactants or other polymers to customize the properties of the solution to improve the processability for the desired application and to form structures such as films, beads and coated porous substrates.

The application concerns a Binder (comprising sulfamic acid, ammonium sulfamate and ammonium sulfate) and process of production of fabrics containing cyclodextrins fixed to the binder. The technology allows fixing a binder to natural, synthetic or artificial fibers, and, by means of a thermal processes, to fix cyclodextrins to the same binder, giving rise to fabrics suitable to incorporate active principles and to release them along with time. Peculiar characteristics of the binder are its abilities to interact with several types of fabric, independently of their composition, and with several types of cyclodextrin. Other peculiarities of embodiments are: the ability to produce functionalized fabrics, adapted to be weighted with desired molecules and release them gradually along time, with a process that does not alter the original characteristics of the fabric; the possibility of repeating several times the weighting of such molecules, so as to be able to define such fabrics as “reloadable” or “rechargeable.”
