Multi-clad optical fiber lasers and their manufacture

An optical fiber is disclosed that can be used as an active medium in fiber lasers and / or fiber amplifiers, featuring a preferably rare-earth-doped silica active core surrounded by a pure or doped silica cladding layer ("pump core"). The pump core is surrounded by a doped or pure silica inner cladding for guiding pumping radiation within the pump core. Thus, the refractive index of the inner cladding is lower than that of the pump core. The fiber is surrounded by a protective coating made of polymeric material. One or more additional outer cladding layers, having refractive indexes lower than said inner cladding, may optionally be placed between the inner cladding and the protective coating to further protect the polymer coating from damage. Unlike the prior art, the protective coating does not serve as the only cladding, but is assisted by the inner cladding and optional outer cladding(s). The resultant fiber restricts radiation mainly to silica layers, thereby increasing the damage threshold and the applicable maximum pump power of the fiber.

Method and apparatus for generation and amplification of light in a semi-guiding high aspect ratio core fiber

A planar laser gain medium and laser system. The novel laser gain medium includes an active core having a high aspect ratio cross-section with a fast-axis dimension and a slow-axis dimension, signal claddings adapted to form reflective boundaries at fast-axis boundaries of the core, and a material adapted to minimize reflections at slow-axis boundaries of the core. In an illustrative embodiment, the laser gain medium is an optical fiber. The core and claddings form a waveguide adapted to control modes propagating in the fast-axis direction. When the laser gain medium is employed as a laser oscillator, a high reflectivity mirror and an outcoupler are positioned at opposite ends of the core to form a laser resonator adapted to control modes in the slow-axis direction.

Optical fiber and integrated optic lasers with enhanced output power

The invention describes a method of single-transverse-mode generation for waveguide lasers of various kinds having a large cross section of their active core and thus providing a possibility of efficient pump of the active core region. This results in a laser beam with enhanced power and high spatial quality for high efficiency coupling to standard single-mode optical fiber networks. It is found that a multimode waveguide having a central dip of special shape in the refractive index profile of its core is able to guide a higher order mode with sharp central peak of its field carrying the considerable part on the mode energy and whose width is well compatible with the width of the fundamental mode of standard single-mode fibers. The useful properties of this higher order mode can be employed to provide the single-transverse-mode regime of generation in optical fiber lasers, integrated optical micro-lasers and various semiconductor laser sources.

Dynamic interrupt reconfiguration for effective power management

Methods, apparatus, and systems for facilitating effective power management through dynamic reconfiguration of interrupts. Interrupt vectors are mapped to various processor cores in a multi-core processor, and interrupt workloads on the processor cores are monitored. When an interrupt workload for a given processor core is detected to fall below a threshold, the interrupt vectors are dynamically reconfigured by remapping interrupt vectors that are currently mapped to the processor core to at least one other processor core, such that there are no interrupt vectors mapped to the processor core after reconfiguration. The core is then enabled to be put in a deeper idle state. Similar operations can be applied to additional processor cores, effecting a collapsing of interrupt vectors onto fewer processor cores. In response to detecting cores emerging from idle states, reconfiguration of interrupt vectors can be performed to rebalance the assignment of the vectors across active cores by remapping a portion of the vectors to those cores.

Dynamic power management optimization

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for managing power usage of integrated circuits. One or more processor cores may be powered down when the system is idle. Even if there is no user activity, the processor core(s) may be woken up periodically for background downloads to retrieve the latest status for social media and other applications. Additionally, a power management unit may track the average number of active cores and the average core utilization. If the average number of active cores is less than a first threshold and the average core utilization is less than a second threshold, the power management unit may generate a request to offline one or more cores. Still further, when the processor's skin temperature is above a threshold and all of the cores are operating at the lowest acceptable operating point, one or more cores may be powered down.

Suppression of cladding mode loss in fiber amplifiers with distributed suppression of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE)

A fiber amplifier in which the active core is surrounded by a cladding and coupling of radiation between a core mode and cladding modes is suppressed to minimize cladding mode losses in a short wavelength range. An index profile is established in the active core and in the cladding such that the core exhibits a loss above a cutoff wavelength λc and positive gains in the short wavelength range below the cutoff wavelength λc. Suppression of cladding mode losses is achieved by an arrangement for suppressing the coupling of radiation in the short wavelength range between a core mode supported the active core and a cladding mode supported by the cladding. The arrangement for suppressing can include an absorbing material or a scattering material distributed in the cladding. The arrangement for suppressing can include a non-phase-matched length section of the fiber amplifier in which the core mode and the cladding modes are not phase matched.
