Personal message service with enhanced text to speech synthesis

A server in a network gathers textual information, such as news items, E-mail and the like. From that information, the server develops or identifies messages for use by individual subscribers. The same server that accumulates the text messages or another server in the network converts the textual information in each message to a sequence of speech synthesizer instructions. The converted messages, containing the sequences of speech synthesizer instructions, are transmitted to each identified subscriber's terminal device. A synthesizer in the terminal generates an audio waveform signal, representing the speech information, in response to the instructions. In the preferred embodiment, the terminals utilize concatenative type speech synthesizers, each of which has an associated vocabulary of stored fundamental sound samples. The instructions identify the sound samples, in order. The instructions also provide parameters for controlling characteristics of the signal generated during waveform synthesis for each sound sample in each sequence. For example, the instructions may specify the pitch, duration, amplitude, attack envelope and decay envelope for each sample. The division of the text to speech synthesis processing between the server and the terminals places the cost of the front end processing in the server, which is a shared resource. As a result, the hardware and software of the terminal may be relatively simple and inexpensive. Also, it is possible to upgrade the quality of the synthesis by upgrading the server software, without modifying the terminals.

Method and a device for maintaining the performance quality of a code-division multiple access system in the presence of narrow band interference

A method and device which dynamically detects, tracks and filters interfering signals with sufficient speed (i.e. within one IS-95 CDMA data frame period, or 20ms and fidelity to eliminate or greatly reduce the deleterious effects of narrow band interferor signals on a CDMA link. When inserted in an RF signal path an Adaptive Notch Filter (ANF) detects narrow band interferors above a threshold level within the CDMA signal. Detection is accomplished by continuous scanning of a preset excision band, e.g. a specified narrow band associated with an AMPS system. Detected interferors are then automatically acquired and suppressed. This is achieved by electronically placing a rejection notch at the frequency of the interferors. Multiple notch filters may be used to simultaneously suppress multiple interferors. In the absence of interferors a bypass mode is selected allowing the RF signal to bypass the notch. Upon detection of an interferor, a switch is made to a suppression mode where the interferor is steered through a first notch section and suppressed. Alternatively, an external control line may be used to select the bypass mode so that the signal is allowed to pass the notch section, regardless of interferer content.

Distributed shared memory using interconnected atomic transaction engines at respective memory interfaces

A hardware-assisted Distributed Memory System may include software configurable shared memory regions in the local memory of each of multiple processor cores. Accesses to these shared memory regions may be made through a network of on-chip atomic transaction engine (ATE) instances, one per core, over a private interconnect matrix that connects them together. For example, each ATE instance may issue Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs), with or without responses, to an ATE instance associated with a remote processor core in order to perform operations that target memory locations controlled by the remote processor core. Each ATE instance may process RPCs (atomically) that are received from other ATE instances or that are generated locally. For some operation types, an ATE instance may execute the operations identified in the RPCs itself using dedicated hardware. For other operation types, the ATE instance may interrupt its local processor core to perform the operations.

Threshold and identity-based key management and authentication for wireless ad hoc networks

As various applications of wireless ad hoc network have been proposed, security has become one of the big research challenges and is receiving increasing attention. The present invention provides for a distributed key management and authentication approach by deploying the recently developed concepts of identity-based cryptography and threshold secret sharing. Without any assumption of pre-fixed trust relationship between nodes, the ad hoc network works in a self-organizing way to provide the key generation and key management service, which effectively solves the problem of single point of failure in the traditional public key infrastructure (PKI)-supported system. The identity-based cryptography mechanism provided not only to provide end-to-end authenticity and confidentiality, but also saves network bandwidth and computational power of wireless nodes.

Method and system for obtaining a point spread function using motion information

The present invention relates to a method and system for obtaining a point spread function for deblurring image data captured by an imaging device comprising a motion sensor. First, motion path values indicating the motion of the imaging device during the exposure time are acquired. The motion path values of the imaging device are then projected onto the sensor plane and for each sensor pixel the projected motion path values are integrated over time. Said integrated value represents for each sensor pixel an initial estimate of the point spread function. Optionally, the size of the point spread function can also be estimated based on the distance of the focused object and taken into account during the projecting step.
