Three-dimensional measurement method and apparatus

The apparatus and method measure the three-dimensional surface shape of a surface without contact with the surface, and without any physical constraint on the device during measurement. The device is a range-sensor or scanner, and in one embodiment is a laser-camera sensor, which has a portable camera and multi-line light projector encased in a compact sensor head, and a computer. The apparatus provides three-dimensional coordinates in a single reference frame of points on the surface. The sensor head does not have to be physically attached to any mechanical positioning device such as a mechanical arm, rail, or translation or rotation stage, and its position in three-dimensional space does not have to be measured by any position-tracking sensor. This allows unrestricted motion of the sensor head during scanning, and therefore provides much greater access to surfaces which are immovable, or which have large dimensions or complex shape, and which are in confined spaces such as interior surfaces. It also permits measurement of a surface to be made by a continuous sweeping motion rather than in stages, and thus greatly simplifies the process of measurement. The apparatus can be hand-held, mounted on any moving device whose motion is unknown or not accurately known, or airborne. The apparatus and method also permit unknown and unmeasured movement of the object whose surface is to be measured, which may be simultaneous with the movement of the range-sensor head.

Method and a device for maintaining the performance quality of a code-division multiple access system in the presence of narrow band interference

A method and device which dynamically detects, tracks and filters interfering signals with sufficient speed (i.e. within one IS-95 CDMA data frame period, or 20ms and fidelity to eliminate or greatly reduce the deleterious effects of narrow band interferor signals on a CDMA link. When inserted in an RF signal path an Adaptive Notch Filter (ANF) detects narrow band interferors above a threshold level within the CDMA signal. Detection is accomplished by continuous scanning of a preset excision band, e.g. a specified narrow band associated with an AMPS system. Detected interferors are then automatically acquired and suppressed. This is achieved by electronically placing a rejection notch at the frequency of the interferors. Multiple notch filters may be used to simultaneously suppress multiple interferors. In the absence of interferors a bypass mode is selected allowing the RF signal to bypass the notch. Upon detection of an interferor, a switch is made to a suppression mode where the interferor is steered through a first notch section and suppressed. Alternatively, an external control line may be used to select the bypass mode so that the signal is allowed to pass the notch section, regardless of interferer content.

Continuous scan tomosynthesis system and method

An imaging system for performing tomosynthesis on a region of an object comprises an x-ray source, motion controller, an x-ray detector and a processing unit. The x-ray source is positioned at a predetermined distance from the object and continuously moves along a path relative to the object at a plurality of predetermined locations. The x-ray source transmits x-ray radiation through the region of the object. The motion controller is coupled to the x-ray source and continuously moves the x-ray source along the path relative to the object. The x-ray source minimizes vibration in the imaging system due to continuous movement. The x-ray detector is positioned at a predetermined distance from the x-ray source and detects the x-ray radiation transmitted through the region of the object, thus acquiring x-ray image data representative of the region of the object. The processing unit is coupled to the x-ray detector for processing the x-ray image data into at least one tomosynthesis image of the region of the object.

Controlled densification of fusible powders in laser sintering

The invention relates to a method producing parts using laser sintering wherein a fusible powder is exposed to a plurality of laser scans at controlled energy levels and for time periods to melt and densify the powder and in the substantial absence of particle bonding outside the fusion boundary. Strength is improved up to 100% compared to previous methods. An example includes a relatively high energy initial scan to melt the powder followed by lower energy scans controlled to densify the melt and separated in time to dissipate heat to the surrounding part cake. The rate and extent to which the powder particles are fused together can be controlled so that each successive scan can be used to fuse the particles together in discreet incremental steps. As a result, the final dimensions of the part and its density and mechanical properties can be improved compared to conventional methods and part growth avoided.

Soft handoff method and apparatus for mobile vehicles using directional antennas

A system and method for implementing soft handoffs in a communications system on a mobile platform. The system employs an antenna controller in communication with a beam forming network that generates two independently aimable lobes from a single beam. The single beam is radiated by a phased array antenna on the mobile platform. In an Air-to-Ground implementation involving an aircraft, a base transceiver station (BTS) look-up position table is utilized to provide the locations of a plurality of BTS sites within a given region that the aircraft is traversing. The antenna controller controls the beam forming network to generate dual lobes from the single beam that facilitate making a soft handoff from one BTS site to another. In a ground-based application, one lobe of the beam is used to maintain a communications link with one BTS site while a second lobe of the beam is continuously scanned about a predetermined arc to receive RF signals from other BTS sites and to determine when a new BTS site has become available that will provide a higher quality link than the link presently made with the one BTS site. A soft handoff is then implemented from the one BTS site to the new BTS site.

Method and apparatus for optically scanning a scene

A light beam is deflected by refraction and total internal reflection through a first prism, and projected through a first lens onto a scene that is to be scanned. The prism rotates, which varies the deflection angle and scans the beam across the scene along a scan line. Preferably, the successive side surfaces of the prism have different tilt angles relative to the rotation axis, so as to respectively deflect the beam in different deflection planes which cause successive scan lines of the beam across the scene. The emitted beam gives rise to a reflected beam from the scene, which is received through a second lens and deflected onto a photodetector through a second prism congruent to and rotating synchronously with the first prism. This apparatus is suitable as a laser scanning device for an object recognition system or a spacing distance regulation system of a motor vehicle.

Method for optical flow field estimation using adaptive Filting

A motion estimation process in video coding takes into account the estimates in the immediate spatio-temporal neighborhood, through an adaptive filtering mechanism, in order to produce a smooth and coherent optical flow field at each pixel position. The adaptive filtering mechanism includes a recursive LMS filter based on pixel-wise algorithm for obtaining motion vectors in a reference image of a video image frame, while consecutively scanning through individual pixels of the image frame. This motion estimation process is particularly well suited for the estimation of small displacements within consecutive video frames, and can be applied in several applications such as super-resolution, stabilization, denoising of video sequences. The method is also well suited for high frame rate video capture.
