Optical fiber sensor system

A system such as for sensing strain or temperature of an aircraft and for transmitting information in communication systems. A sensor array includes a first light responsive Bragg grating sensor having a first operating bandwidth and a second light responsive Bragg grating sensor having a second operating bandwidth. Each sensor modifies light provided to it at a wavelength indicative of changes in strain or temperature. The second sensor operates within a bandwidth which is different from the operating bandwidth of the first sensor. A tunable light source such as an LED and tunable etalon provides light for illuminating the first and second sensors, the provided light having a wavelength which varies within a band including the first and second bandwidths. A detecting circuit provides signals representative of light modified by the first and second sensors. A processor processes the representative signals to determine the strain and / or temperature.

Continuously Variable Transmission with Mutliple Outputs

ActiveUS20080081728A1Efficient power utilizationSaving of weightFriction gearingsManual control with multiple controlling membersEngineeringProsthetic hand
A transmission or actuator offering multiple rotational outputs proportionate in speed to that of a common rotational input, each output according to its own ratio. The ratios are continuously variable between positive and negative values, including zero, and may be varied by electromechanical actuators under computer control. The transmission relates the output speeds one to another under computer control, and thus makes possible the establishment of virtual surfaces and other haptic effects in a multidimensional workspace to which the transmission outputs are kinematically linked. An example of such a workspace is that of a robotic or prosthetic hand.

In-wheel electric motors

Improved in-wheel, near-wheel and direct-drive electric motors for cars and other vehicles. This motor can be cheaper, lighter, more powerful, more efficient, and more reliable than other direct-drive motors. Its high torque-density and high performance allow it to produce the same peak power as heavier, bigger motors. That helps greatly with the handling issues caused by too much unsprung mass. The motor control system can adapt to the vehicle's operating conditions (like starting, accelerating, turning, braking, and cruising at high speeds). That provides better performance. The motor's low-voltage, low-current design helps reduce heat and weight and leads to lower motor cost. The motor can still operate with some faults, offering “get home” capability. It offers all the benefits of in-wheel motors: efficiency, compactness, direct traction control, quiet, simple driveline. And it adds to those benefits, while reducing or eliminating the drawbacks other in-wheel motors.

Single-axis fin deployment system

ActiveUS20060163423A1Improve capability and performanceLow costAerial display rocketsSelf-propelled projectilesCoil springEngineering
A missile has fins that rotate about a single axis to deploy from a stowed position to a deployed position. A foil longitudinal axis of each fin is angled relative to a shaft of the fin, such that a single-axis rotation of the shaft moves the foil from the stowed position to a deployed position. A coil spring may provide both torsion and compression forces to rotate the fin into the deployed position and lock it into place. Torsion rotates the shaft until it reaches a seat on a bushing that is around the shaft. Then compression forces from the spring engage a keyed protrusion on the shaft with a corresponding keyway in the bushing, locking the shaft in place. There may be an additional lock once the fin is deployed, such as a spring-loaded pin in the missile body that engages a depression in the shaft.

Beverage maker

The present invention provides a beverage maker having an in-line heating assembly for heating water to make hot beverages such as coffee and tea. The heating assembly defines a flow path that runs past a plurality of heaters for heating water to a desired temperature. In this manner, the beverage maker heats water as it travels, alleviating the need for a water tank or vessel, resulting in increased savings in weight and size, as well as reducing brew time. Additionally, an optical sensor assembly is provided to detect when a serving container of the beverage maker has a prescribed capacity of liquid within it. The sensor assembly includes at least one light source aligned to shine into the container and at least one detector aligned to detect light reflected off the liquid surface within the container. A drainage assembly is also provided that can drain liquid through either a connector port into an airplane's wastewater system or through a drainage port into a drainage sump.
