The invention relates to a method and device for transmitting light over a fat fiber (1) between optical components (B1; B2) of an optical measuring device, which are provided at a launching end (C) and at an extraction end (R; K; O) of the fat fiber (1). Said measuring device comprises a guiding means for the curved rigid guidance of a first partial section (PQ; FGHI; IJ; FL; LM; MN) of the fat fiber (1). If the radius of curvature of the curved guidance falls below a first limit, the light beam profile of the fat fiber (1) is homogenized by a mode mixing. In order to diminish the effect on the transmitted light caused by a permitted change in position of the fat fiber (1), a stiffening means, which is rigidly connected to the guiding means, is provided for rigidly guiding a second partial section (QR; JK; NO) of the fat fiber (1). Said second partial section connects to the first partial section (PQ; FGH; IJ; FL; LM; MN) and extends essentially up to the optical component (B2) located at the extraction end (R; K; O), whereby the entire length of the first and second partial section is at least provided with a length that renders the extraction end (R; K; O) of the fat fiber (1) mechanically stable.

A system for measuring fatigue of a component of an aircraft subject to mechanical stresses includes: a plurality of stress sensors mounted on the component, each sensor being configured to detect a predetermined mechanical stress threshold and to deliver a data signal representative of exceeding of the threshold; and a mechanism for recording the data and the sensors configured to detect different stress thresholds so as to make it possible to calculate, on the basis of the data recorded by the system, an estimation of fatigue of the component due to the mechanical stresses. It is thus possible to optimize overhaul of the components.

A dual cell Electrochemical Impedance System (EIS) testing apparatus and method for measuring coating integrity on various substrates. The counter reference electrode is in a first cell in electrical contact with the coating. The working electrode is in a second cell in electrical contact with the coating instead of the substrate material acting as the working electrode. Voltage is applied at the working electrode at varying frequencies and current is measured at the combined reference / counter electrode. From the known voltage and the measured current, the impedance of the coating is calculated. Coatings on non-metallic substrates can be measured with this apparatus. In one embodiment, the EIS cells are in the form of vacuum cups containing an electrolyte gel for testing non-horizontal coatings in the field. Also, known current can be applied to the working electrode and voltage measured at the counter reference electrode can be used to calculate coating impedance.

Method and apparatus for measuring in-situ stress of rock using thermal crack

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for measuring in-situ stress in rock using a thermal crack. The method involves forming a borehole, cooling a wall of the borehole, applying tensile thermal stress, forming a crack in the borehole wall, and measuring temperature and cracking point. Afterwards, the borehole wall is heated to close the formed crack, the borehole wall is cooled again to re-open the crack, and temperature is measured when the crack is re-opened. The in-situ stress of the rock is calculated using a first cracking temperature at which the crack is formed and a second cracking temperature at which the crack is re-opened. Further, the apparatus cools, heats and re-cools the borehole wall, thereby measuring the first cracking temperature, the second cracking temperature, and the cracking point.

A non-sampling-based Q-factor measuring apparatus and method use a power conversion module to transform the power variation of inputted optical signals in time domain into the variation in other domains, such as optical wavelength, optical polarization and different output ports of optical elements. Taking optical wavelength as an example, different levels of power variation respond different outputs of wavelength variation through the use of a power-to-wavelength conversion module. An optical filter then separates the inputted optical signals with different wavelengths. The power average of a wavelength for its corresponding optical signals is further calculated by a photo detector. Thereby, the information of the power variation for the inputted optical signals at levels 1 and 0 can be obtained, and the Q-factor for the inputted optical signals is easily measured.

In a particular embodiment, the analyte comprises glycated hemoglobin or HbA1c, and the optical reader device is configured to determine HbA1c concentration.
