Light emitting device using led

A light-emitting device (10) using an LED is proposed. This light-emitting device (10) is provided with a packaging substrate (1), a light-emitting element (2) which is mounted on this packaging substrate (1) with its face down, a fluorescent member (3) that is arranged face to face with a light-extracting surface (S) of the light-emitting element (2) without contacting the light-emitting element (2) and an optical member (4) which receives light that has been emitted from the light-emitting element (2) and made incident thereon through the fluorescent member (3), and aligns the incident light toward the outside of the device. Light, emitted from the light-emitting element (2), is made incident on the fluorescent member (3) to excite the fluorescent material so that the fluorescent material re-emits light having a wavelength different from that of the incident light. Those light rays, emitted from the light-emitting element (2), which have not been absorbed by the fluorescent member (3) and have passed through the fluorescent member (3) and those light rays that have been emitted from the fluorescent material are made incident on the optical member (4) and are aligned. Because the fluorescent member (3) is not made in contact with the light-emitting element (2), it does not receive the heat from the light-emitting element (2) through heat conduction, and consequently becomes less susceptible to degradation due to heat. Moreover, with the face-down mounting structure, the fluorescent member (3) and the optical member (4) can be placed closer to the light-emitting element (2) as long as they dose not contact the light-emitting element (2). Consequently, the service life of the fluorescent material or the fluorescent-material-mixed resin that tends to deteriorate can be lengthened, lights can be extracted more efficiently, and light rays can be properly aligned in a predetermined direction.

Golf club with impact display

A golf training club comprising optical sensors, electronics and a display to provide visual feedback related to how a golfer strikes a golf ball. The club includes a shaft having a grip end and a tip distal from the grip end. The club has a club head affixed to the shaft proximate the tip that has a face for striking a golf ball. The optical sensors are embedded in the head and generate signals representative of the contact between the face and ball. The electronics, mounted within the shaft's grip end, process the sensor signals to determine the location of the contact between the face and ball. The display is operable to show such location. The electronics also process the sensor signals to determine whether the ball is tending to slice or hook by detecting lateral movement of the ball during contact with the face.

Synthesis of A,B-alternating copolymers by olefin metathesis reactions of cyclic olefins or olefinic polymers with an acyclic diene

This invention relates generally to synthetic procedures that include the step of ring-opening metathesis of cyclic olefins and reaction with an acyclic diene co-reactant to produce regularly repeating A,B-alternating olefin polymers. The A,B-alternating polymers are produced by varying reaction conditions and / or reactant proportions and using only two types of olefin metathesis (ring-opening and cross) to provide regularly repeating ABAB . . . etc. polymers via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). More particularly, the invention pertains to synthesis of A,B-alternating olefin polymers via olefin metathesis reactions using a Group 8 transition metal complex as the metathesis catalyst. Polymers provided herein have utility in a variety of fields, including not only polymer chemistry per se, but also in the pharmaceutical, biomedical, and packaging industries where the structure and properties of polymers need to be tightly controlled.

Video compression method optimized for low-power decompression platforms

An encoder is provided with an additional coding feature that comprises a time-related term added to a traditional cost function that uses only distortion and byte usage for calculating cost. The time-related term comprises the time that a real decoder needs for decoding a block, and a coefficient. The use of the time-related term will often result in a decision to select a compression mode that is faster to decode than a mode obtained with the traditional cost function. Preferably each receiving terminal belongs to a certain capacity group having specific additional coding features. A single original video is encoded individually for each capacity group according to the additional features of the capacity group in question. The individual encoding relating to each group guarantees that decoding times of frames absolutely or in average remain below the time that real receiving terminals need for decoding encoded frames.

GPS-based steering needle instrument

A a flight instrument enabling a pilot to intercept and precisely follow a predefined GPS track. The instrument—known as a GPS steering indicator—provides a visual display which is similar in appearance to other aircraft instruments (and therefore instantly recognizable to nearly all pilots). However, the instrument is preferably differentiated somewhat in its visual appearance to convey to the pilot the fact that it displays steering commands rather than cross track error. An indicator needle deflects to instruct the pilot which way to turn and how much to turn in order to intercept and fly along a predefined GPS track. By centering the indicator needle, the pilot maintains the desired instantaneous track.

Method for updating a data record and device for carrying out the method

When updating a data record identified by a version number, the problem exists that a simple not equal to comparison or greater than comparison is often insufficient for ascertaining the up-to-date nature of the newly received data record, particularly if the data record is transmitted to a receiving station via an unsecured data link and the version number originates from a limited range which is repeatedly run through periodically. The invention solves the problem by virtue of the fact that it divides the range of values of the version number into the ranges “old” and “new”, on the basis of the current value of a version number. The periodicity with which the range of values is run through is taken into account in this case, however. That is to say that the range “old” or the range “new” may perfectly well include the jump from the highest value in the range of values to the lowest value in the range of values. If the version number of the newly received data record lies in the range “new”, the new data record is accepted as a current data record, and if not it is correspondingly rejected.
