403 results about "Radiation angle" patented technology

In fiber optics, the radiation angle is half the vertex angle of the cone of light emitted at the exit face of an optical fiber. The cone boundary is usually defined (a) by the angle at which the far-field irradiance has decreased to a specified fraction of its maximum value or (b) as the cone within which there is a specified fraction of the total radiated power at any point in the far field.

Method and device for inspecting pipelines

The invention concerns a method and a device for inspecting pipelines, in particular for detecting defects in pipelines by means of ultrasound. Towards this end, measuring sensors transmit ultrasound signals during passage through a pipeline. The signals reflected on boundary regions of a pipeline wall, e.g. surfaces or defects, are then measured and evaluated. The invention is characterized in that partial regions of the measuring sensors (virtual sensors) formed of a plurality of neighboring sensor elements irradiate ultrasound signals into the pipe wall at at least one radiation angle which is inclined with respect to the normal to the pipe wall and the signals reflected at boundary regions of the pipe wall are received by same and / or other partial regions of the respective measuring sensors, wherein defects in the pipe wall are determined by evaluation of the acoustical signals reflected by different boundary regions.

Low profile antenna

A low-profile antenna has increased broad-banding capacities as well as a lower radiation angle for enhanced cellular or mobile telephone wireless transmissions. Enhancing a basic PIFA antenna, a top metal radiator is notched so as to provide additional corners and greater perimeter length thereby enhancing the bandwidth capabilities of the antenna. Both ground and tuning tabs serve to enhance operational characteristics and a dielectric cover incorporating prismatic qualities serves to lower the radiation angle of transmission from approximately forty degrees (40 DEG ) to twenty degrees (20 DEG ). The prisms provide an operating radiation angle in the range of approximately seventy degrees (70 DEG ) to twenty degrees (20 DEG ). In one embodiment, a sheet of plastic foam slightly thicker than the depth of an associated connector is secured to the underside of the bottom plate to act as a friction seal when the antenna is screwed onto a mating connector, allowing for slight variations in the curvature of the mounting surface. By making the bottom conductive plate only slightly larger than the top radiator, the antenna's resonant frequency becomes independent of ground plane mounting and may not require such a ground plane. Under such circumstances, some adjustment of the tuning parameters may be required in order to provide optimum response.

Semiconductor light-emitting device and method for fabricating the same

Projections / depressions of a two-dimensional periodic structure are formed in a p-GaN layer (4) such that the period of the projections / depressions is 1 to 20 times the wavelength of light radiated from an active layer (3) in a semiconductor. As a result, a diffractive effect achieved by the projections / depressions of the two-dimensional periodic structure change the direction in which the light radiated from the active layer (3) travels. If the projections / depressions are not provided, light at a radiation angle which satisfies conditions for total reflection at the interface between a semiconductor device and an air cannot be extracted to the outside of the semiconductor device so that the light emission efficiency of the device is low. By contrast, the projections / depressions as formed with a period according to the present invention diffract the light at an angle which does not cause total reflection so that the efficiency with which the light is extracted to the outside of the semiconductor device is improved exponentially. This improves the light emission efficiency of the device.
