Disk drive with AC exciter for head/disk interface

A disk drive includes a disk for storing information, a head with a transducer that writes data to and reads data from the disk, and an AC power source. The head is suspended adjacent to the disk and a flying height gap exists at the head / disk interface. The AC power source generates an AC exciter signal across the flying height gap that discharges electrostatic charge at the head / disk interface. The head / disk capacitance can be measured based on the AC exciter signal to sense the flying height. The AC exciter signal can also alter an attraction force between the head and the disk and thus control flying height. The AC exciter signal can also be based on a flying height signal representative of the head / disk capacitance and thus the flying height.

The inventive method assesses the stability of an electric power transmission network, where said network comprises a plurality of substations, buses and lines, and a system protection center (8). It comprises the steps of 1. measuring phasor data (9) for voltages and currents at a plurality of locations of the network, 2. transmitting said phasor data (9) to said system protection center (8), 3. transmitting information (5) regarding the state of switches of at least one substation to the system protection center (8), and 4. the system protection center (8) determining at least one stability margin value of the transmission network. In this way, detailed real-time information about the state of the network is collected at a system level of the network, allowing a corresponding global analysis of the information. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the system protection center determines one or more control commands (6), based on the phasor data (9) and on the state of switches. The control commands (5) are transmitted to at least one substation and executed there.

Method for control of NOx emission from combustors using fuel dilution

A method of controlling NOx emission from combustors. The method involves the controlled addition of a diluent such as nitrogen or water vapor, to a base fuel to reduce the flame temperature, thereby reducing NOx production. At the same time, a gas capable of enhancing flame stability and improving low temperature combustion characteristics, such as hydrogen, is added to the fuel mixture. The base fuel can be natural gas for use in industrial and power generation gas turbines and other burners. However, the method described herein is equally applicable to other common fuels such as coal gas, biomass-derived fuels and other common hydrocarbon fuels. The unique combustion characteristics associated with the use of hydrogen, particularly faster flame speed, higher reaction rates, and increased resistance to fluid-mechanical strain, alter the burner combustion characteristics sufficiently to allow operation at the desired lower temperature conditions resulting from diluent addition, without the onset of unstable combustion that can arise at lower combustor operating temperatures.

Wireless illuminated indicators for motorcycle helmets

A wireless braking and turning indicator attached to a motorcycle helmet and a motorcycle mounted transmitter is herein disclosed. An illumination assembly is attached on the rear surface of the helmet by means of either double-sided adhesive or an elastic band. An integral wireless receiver powered by a rechargeable battery receives a signal from a transmitter mounted on the motorcycle and electrically connected to the brake and turn signal indication circuits. In such a manner, the helmet-mounted light assembly will illuminate whenever the motorcycle brakes are applied in much the same manner as a center-mounted high brake light on motor vehicles. Turning direction is also indicated in like manner. When used, the rider's head is at a sufficient elevation to be easily seen by following traffic.
