Personal protection device

A pocket-sized self-defense spray device is capable of dispensing a chemical irritant to cause temporary breathing difficulty and a burning sensation in the eyes of the target without any permanent damage. The device comprises a casing, a nozzle, and a multi-position trigger. The trigger is slidably mounted in the casing to be moveable from a safe position to an active position. The casing may contain a battery-powered light that is switched on to illuminate the target when the trigger is in the active position. The trigger button in the second position may then be depressed into an engaged position that causes chemical irritant to be discharged from a removable canister with a poppet valve into a nozzle chamber, and out the nozzle exit at a target. The casing includes an ergonomic finger grip that serves to prevent inadvertent discharge at the user, and ease of aiming at the target.

Housing for chemical irritant dispenser

InactiveUS7644839B2Conveniently firedPrecise aimingDollsLarge containersEngineeringActuator
A housing can be mounted to a pistol or other weapon and conveniently fired therefrom and can be used as a discrete weapon itself. A cap has a central aperture which secures the nozzle and / or valve stem of a canister of chemical irritant from movement and is secured to the proximal end of a hollow tube. A feature of the new invention is a slot access running along the length of the tube for some distance from its distal end. The tube may be either open or closed at its distal end. Toward the distal end of the tube, an interior ridge or stop cooperates with the cap aperture to secure the canister of irritant. When a canister is installed in the housing, the operator can release an irritant spray axially from the canister by pressing a digit against the side of the canister's storage cylinder and, thereby, displace its longitudinal axis along an arc. The housing need have no other mechanisms, except the housing and canister. This method also allows for convenient triggering of a spray from a canister within the housing when the housing is secured under or adjacent to the barrel of a handgun. In some embodiments an actuator compresses against a spring-loaded pusher to contact the side of the storage cylinder and move the longitudinal axis of the storage cylinder to release a spray.

The present invention provides a method of using agents which can modulate TRPA1 function as counteragents to inhibit the physical effects of chemical irritants/toxicants when given prior to exposure or to lessen the physical effects when administered post exposure, and more specifically, to a method for counteracting the acute physical noxious effects of toxicants, including but not limited to, tear gases, chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, phosgene, chloropicrin, isocyanates and mustard gas. Administering the counteragents counteracts pain, inflammation, lachrymation, blepharospasm, respiratory irritation and depression, airway mucus secretion, airway obstruction and injury, cough and incapacitation and cutaneous chemical injuries. Another embodiment provides a method of preventing or treating a disease or condition in a mammal, which disease or condition includes hypersensitivity to chemical stimuli, particularly in regards to inflammatory airway conditions, such as asthma, rhinitis, etc., by administering to the mammal a therapeutically effective amount of a compound that inhibits TRPA1 function, wherein the compound reduces the hypersensitivity and mediates the response to such chemical stimuli in the mammal. The invention also includes a kit containing the compound that inhibits the TRPA1 function as a counteracting agent for administration prior to or post exposure to prevent or limit the effects of the exposure.

Diagnosis and treatment of inflammation and hyperactive immune conditions

Ecto-NTPDase function on Langerhans cells is demonstrated to counteract the nucleotide inflammatory response caused by certain types of chemical irritants. The present invention takes advantage of this observation by, first, providing methods for screening of chemicals for irritant potential based on their ability to induce nucleotide release from keratinocytes. Second, methods are provided for the prevention and treatment of inflammation using NTPDase protein or gene therapy. And third, there also are provided methods for screening candidate compounds for NTPDase modulatory activity, thereby identifying possible pro- and anti-inflammatory agents. Additionally, the role of NTPDases and P2 receptors in hyperactive immune conditions such as autoimmune diseases and allergic reactions such as allergic contact dermatitis has been demonstrated. Therefore, the invention also provides methods for the prevention and treatment of hyperactive immune conditions by using NTPDase inhibitors and / or P2 receptor inhibitors. Further provided are methods for screening candidate compounds for modulatory activity of NTPDase-mediated immune conditions, thereby identifying other possible immunotherapeutic agents.
