Persistent snapshot methods

A persistent snapshot is taken and maintained in accordance with a novel method and system for extended periods of time using only a portion of a computer readable medium of which the snapshot is taken. Multiple snapshots can be taken in succession at periodic intervals and maintained practically indefinitely. The snapshots are maintained even after powering down and rebooting of the computer system. The state of the object of the snapshot for each snapshot preferably is accessible via a folder on volume of the snapshot. A restore of a file or folder may be accomplished by merely copying that file or folder from the snapshot folder to a current directory of the volume. Alternatively, the entire computer system may be restored to a previous snapshot state thereof. Snapshots that occurred after the state to which the computer is restored are not lost in the restore operation. Different rule sets and scenarios can be applied to each snapshot. Furthermore, each snapshot can be written to within the context of the snapshot and later restored to its pristine condition. Software for implementing the systems and methods of snapshots in accordance with the present invention may comprise firmware of a hard disk drive controller or a disk controller board or within the HDD casing itself. The present invention further comprises novel systems and methods in which the systems and methods of taking and maintaining snapshots are utilized in creating and managing temporal data stores, including temporal database management systems. The implications for data mining and exploration, data analysis, intelligence gathering, and artificial intelligence (just to name a few areas) are profound.

Apparatus and method for monitoring system health based on fuzzy metric data ranges and fuzzy rules

A method and apparatus for determining the status of a computer system and software applications running on that system and displaying the status to a system administrator are provided. With the apparatus and method, metrics related to a particular application or subsystem are identified and then collected over a predetermined period of time using a data monitoring or collection facility to generate metric history data. Once collected, the metric history data is analyzed by computing a set of parameters representing statistical measures of the metric history data. A set of fuzzy rules are used to define the relationships between metrics and the ultimate application or subsystem status. This metric history analysis phase may be performed periodically such that the fuzzy sets are dynamically redefined at periodic intervals. The fuzzy rules are then evaluated using a fuzzy reasoning process and an overall status indication is generated. As system performance or status changes, the monitoring system can adapt by changing the shape of the “normal” fuzzy set based on the distribution of metric values. The rules may remain the same but the fuzzy set may change dynamically. This greatly reduces maintenance costs since the monitoring rule set can be slowly tuned over time, while the underlying “normal” fuzzy sets could be adjusted as often as needed. Thus, the method and apparatus provide a mechanism to express the knowledge about the key underlying relationships as fuzzy rules and then to automatically tailor the fuzzy sets that are referenced in the fuzzy rules using statistical data mining techniques.

Method and apparatus for reducing noise in speech and audio signals

A method and apparatus are disclosed for enhancing, within a signal bandwidth, a corrupted audio-frequency signal. The signal which is to be enhanced is analyzed into plural sub-band signals, each occupying a frequency sub-band smaller than the signal bandwidth. A respective signal gain function is applied to each sub-band signal, and the respective sub-band signals are then synthesized into an enhanced signal of the signal bandwidth. The signal gain function is derived, in part, by measuring speech energy and noise energy, and from these determining a relative amount of speech energy, within the corresponding sub-band. In certain embodiments of the invention, the signal gain function is also derived, in part, by determining a relative amount of speech energy within a frequency range greater than, but centered on, the corresponding sub-band. In other embodiments of the invention, the sub-band noise energy is determined from a noise estimate that is updated at periodic intervals, but is not updated if the newest sample of the signal to be enhanced exceeds the current noise estimate by a multiplicative threshold (i.e., a threshold expressible in decibels). In still other embodiments of the invention, the value of the noise estimate is limited by an upper bound that is matched to the dynamic range of the signal to be enhanced.

Photonic bandgap device using coupled defects

A photonic bandgap device has a lattice structure, with a waveguide formed by a mesh of defects in the lattice, the defects being located discontinuously, but sufficiently close to each other to provide coupling between overlapping evanescent defect modes. By changing shape and configuration of the mesh and varying the types of defects, it is easier to control the width and position of the transmission band, in wavelength terms, compared to a waveguide formed only from a planar defect, i.e. a single line of defects. Multiplexers, demultiplexers, filters, switches, combiners, and splitters may be created. Many devices and different types of devices can be integrated onto the same crystal lattice, with far greater compactness than planar waveguide technology. The mesh can have a periodic structure of lines of defects, or periodic spacing between defects to reduce loss.
