Programmable sample filtering for image rendering

A graphics system configured to perform programmable filtering of samples to generate pixel values. The graphics system comprises a frame buffer, an accelerator unit and a video output processor. The accelerator unit receives graphics primitives, renders samples for the graphics primitives, and stores the rendered samples into a sample area of the frame buffer. The accelerator unit subsequently reads the samples from the sample area of the frame buffer, and filters the samples with a programmable filter having a programmable support region. The resulting pixel values are stored in a pixel area of the frame buffer. The video output processor reads the pixel values from the pixel area and converts the pixel values into a video signal which is provided to a video output port.

Human visual system (HVS)-based pre-filtering of video data

An adaptive pre-processing technique is provided to reduce perceptually unimportant information in a frame (such as some of the high frequency information) so as to optimize compression efficiency and to maximize perceived video quality of a compressed video sequence for a given bit rate. This pre-processing includes a combination of performing pre-filtering of video data to remove high frequency components and to smooth out high frequency texture information within object boundaries, based at least in part on human visual system characteristics. The technique is adaptive in that feedback regarding the current state of the encoder is used to change the filtering strength or region of support for subsequent frames, as needed, in order to maintain the bit budget while still generating visually acceptable video quality.

Network for a cellular communication system and a method of operation therefor

A network for a cellular communication system comprises access points (105-109) supporting cells within a region (113). Each access point (105-109) has an individual proxy address of a proxy address space which is a local address space of an address proxy (101) and a common network address of a network address space which is a network wide address space. A gateway access point (103) covers an entry point to the region (113) and detects a remote station entering the region. It then determines an access point (105) in the region to which the remote station is handed over and transmits a binding message to the address proxy (101) with an indication of the access point (105). In response to receiving the binding message, the address proxy (101) establishes a binding between the common network address and the proxy address of the access point (105). Data for the remote station is then forwarded to the access point (105) using the binding.

Rebinning methods and arrangements for use in compressing image-based rendering (IBR) data

Rebinning methods and arrangements are provided that significantly improve the 3D wavelet compression performance of the image based rendering data, such as, e.g., concentric mosaic image data. Through what is essentially a selective cutting and pasting process the image data is divided into stripes that are then used to form a set of multi-perspective panoramas. The rebinning process greatly improves the performance of the cross shot filtering, and thus improves the transform and coding efficiency of 3D wavelet codecs. While the region of support after rebinning may cease to be rectangular in some cases, a padding scheme and an arbitrary shape wavelet coder can be implemented to encode the result data volume of the smart rebinning. With an arbitrary shape wavelet codec, the rebinning outperforms MPEG-2 by 3.7 dB, outperforms direct 3D wavelet coder by 4.3 dB, and outperforms a reference block coder (RBC) by 3.2 dB on certain tested concentric mosaic image scenes. Hence, the rebinning process nearly quadruples the compression ratio for selected scenes. Additional methods and arrangements are provided that include selectively dividing the image data into slits and rebinning the slits into a huge 2D array, which is then compressed using conventional still image codecs, such as, JPEG.

Systems and methods for automatically determining object information and systems and methods for control based on automatically determined object information

An image of high-aspect-ratio objects is analyzed to locate linear features within the image. The gradient direction for each pixel is determined, and connected pixels having similar gradient directions are grouped into line support regions. A linear feature is determined for each line support region. The linear features are analyzed to identify those that are co-linear. The linear features are then analyzed to find groups that are parallel and that sufficiently overlap. Additional sets of linear features that intersect the identified group are combined into that group. The line support regions of the grouped linear features are analyzed to determine representative orientation and / or dimensional information, which is analyzed to determine statistical information about a plurality of the objects. This information is used to monitor or control one or more processes associated with the objects, to reject the objects or a structure or device comprising the objects, or the like.
