Sensing System Using Optical Fiber Suited to High Temperatures

Remote sensing in an environment having temperatures greater than 300° C., using an optical fiber having a core (10), a cladding (20), and a metallic protective coating (30) on the cladding to protect a surface of the cladding, the cladding having a diameter greater than 150 μm, and a thickness of at least 50 μm. The larger diameter cladding means stress from the metallic protective layer can be reduced, giving lower optical loss and better hydrogen protection. A metal conduit (330) encapsulates the sensing fiber, and a pump evacuates the conduit to reduce hydrogen seepage. Ceramic splice protectors are used. OTDR is used to determine differential loss at different locations along the fiber. A reflective element at the far-end of the fiber eases calibration.

Method of manufacturing semiconductor article

A method of manufacturing a semiconductor article comprises steps of forming a diffusion region at least on the surface of one of the sides of a silicon substrate by diffusing an element capable of controlling the conduction type, forming a porous silicon layer in a region including the diffusion region, preparing a first substrate by forming a nonporous semiconductor layer on the porous silicon layer, bonding the first substrate and a second substrate together to produce a multilayer structure with the nonporous semiconductor layer located inside, splitting the multilayer structure along the porous silicon layer but not along the diffusion region and removing the porous silicon layer remaining on the split second substrate.

Enhanced video processing functionality in auxiliary system

According to example configurations herein, a downstream video processor operates in conjunction with an existing consumer-operated tuner system. The downstream video processor system can be an add-on system disposed in a communication link between the consumer-operated tuner system and a remote video playback device such as a hi-definition television. In lieu of processing video data locally in the set-top box, the consumer-operated tuner system can transmit the video data to the downstream video processor for processing. The downstream video processor in the communication link can be configured to provide enhanced video processing services (e.g., better resolution, higher frame rate rates, enhanced signal to noise ratio, enhanced color quality, 3-D graphics, etc.) with respect to video processing services supported by an upstream video decoder in the consumer-operated tuner system.

Flushing valve

ActiveUS20100306911A1Minimising effect of water hammerExpensive to replaceDiaphragm valvesEngine diaphragmsInlet valveEngineering
A flushing valve suitable for reducing water wastage from a cistern of a toilet is described. The flushing valve comprising an inlet valve, an outlet valve and a timer valve. The timer valve is mechanically connected to both the inlet valve and the outlet valve so as to control their movement between an open and a closed position such that the timer valve prevents both the inlet valve and the outlet valve from simultaneously being in their open positions. By preventing the inlet valve and the outlet valve from simultaneously being in their open positions results in the fact that the flushing valve does not allow the cistern to start to refill until after the flush process is complete. This results in a significant reduction in the volume of water passing through the cistern during each flushing cycle.
