Laser desorption - electrospray ion (ESI) source for mass spectrometers

An ion source is disclosed for forming multiply-charged analyte ions from a solid sample. A beam of pulsed radiation is directed onto a portion of the sample to desorb analyte molecules. A retaining structure holding a solvent volume is positioned proximate the sample. Desorbed analyte molecules contact a free surface of the solvent and pass into solution. The solution is then conveyed through an outlet passageway to an electrospray apparatus, which introduces a spray of charged solvent droplets into an ionization chamber.

Cardiac ablation using microbubbles

In a cardiac ablation procedure, ultrasonic energy is emitted from an ultrasonic ablation device (28) and is focused on myocardial tissue (30) within the wall of the heart or within the wall of a blood vessel connected to the heart (10). Ultrasound attenuation of the cardiac tissue is selectively increased by introducing microbubbles into the circulatory system of the subject so that the microbubbles enter the coronary arteries and pass into the myocardial tissue.

Intelligent passive navigation system for back-up and verification of GPS

A passive navigation system for an airborne platform includes an on-board computer having a database that contains preprogrammed information regarding pre-existing ground-based signal emitters (e.g. cell-phone, television and radio broadcast transmitters). For each emitter, the database includes the geolocation of the emitter and identifying signal characteristic(s) of each emitter's signal such as frequency, bandwidth and strength. An antenna array and digital receiver cooperate with the computer on the platform to passively receive signals from the emitters and determine a direction of arrival (DOA) for selected signals. The computer also extracts identifying signal characteristic(s) from selected received signals and matches them against the database information to ascertain the geolocation of the emitter that corresponds to the received signal. The platform location is then calculated from the DOA(s) and emitter geolocations using a triangulation-type algorithm. Also, preprogrammed site-specific terrain scattering information can be compared to observed scattered signals to enhance system accuracy.

Ion source for analysis of low volatility species in the gas phase

A method and apparatus that ionize vapors for their chemical analysis is described. The new ionizer improves the ionization efficiency by reducing dilution of sample molecules and improving transmission of ions to the analyzer. This is accomplished by a new flow configuration, in which a stream of clean gas focuses the ions towards the analyzer. A deflector prevents the formation of turbulent perturbation, and the ionization maintains a laminar regime without the need for additional separating walls or electrodes. The flow within the ionizer is configured so that contaminants released by the inner walls of the ionizer do not reach the ionization region. The resulting ionizer improves the ionization efficiency, and the background levels for low volatility species. This makes it ideal for the analysis of low volatility species in the gas phase. One application of this ionizer is the analysis of human breath in real time.

Method and apparatus for high mass concentration NANO particle generation

A method and apparatus for generating nano particles, including but not limited to nano particles of Ceo, at high concentration. The invention uses a solid aerosol disperser in communication with a furnace tube having a vaporization chamber and a dilution chamber. A heating element surrounds the furnace tube. Heat from the heating element heats bulk materials contained within a gas flow in the vaporization chamber to a temperature sufficient to convert the bulk materials to a vapor phase. Vaporized bulk materials are then moved to a dilution chamber, where an inert gas is introduced through a dilution gas port. The flow of the inert gas into the dilution chamber through the dilution gas port is sufficient to eject the bulk material from the exit of the dilution chamber, thereby condensing the bulk material into nano sized particles in a gas flow of sufficient volume to prevent agglomeration of the nano sized particles.

Method and apparatus for facilitating delivery of anaesthetic

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for facilitating anaesthesia, particularly in Re-Breather anaesthetic circuits. A problem with Re-Breather circuits is that their dynamic response can be relatively slow. The dynamic response is the response of the circuit to delivering changes of anaesthetic concentration. In current circuits, Fresh Gas containing anaesthetic is delivered into the circuit and may be substantially diluted by the gas already present in the circuit. It is therefore difficult to achieve a rapid increase of anaesthetic concentration for delivery to the patient. In the present invention, an accumulator is placed in the Re-Breather circuit to accumulate Fresh Gas containing anaesthetic as it is introduced into the circuit, adjacent an inhalation conduit to the patient. Fresh Gas containing high concentrations of anaesthetic is therefore immediately available to the patient.

Salt brine capillary crystallization

This invention relates to apparatus for a method of crystallization of salt from brine on top of any soil surface through airborne brine droplet crystallization, controlled moisture depth, capillary action and enhanced renewable energy to grow a layer of salt which can be collected. The brine is pumped from an underground source, sprayed in ambient air over a solid surface and, if water is not completely evaporated, allowed to seep through the surface to saturate the capillary zone. Water is evaporated while the sprayed brine is in the air or on the surface where capillary action brings it up to the surface for the water component to be evaporated by net heat gained from the environment resulting in salt crystallization. The evaporation of sprayed brine is enhanced by smaller droplet size, residence time due the spray height and wind machines to reduce humidity and increase natural thermal input. The salt layer thus formed further grows by capillary action of the soil and the crystalline salt to a depth suitable for standard mechanical harvesting. Instrumentation is included to optimize the method through the measurement of evaporation and moisture content of the lower boundary of the capillary zone of the soil and or crystalline salt as well as atomizing heads and a cleaning system.
