Telemetric tibial tray

ActiveUS20050010302A1Reduce riskEliminates stress riserSurgeryPerson identificationStrain rateKnee Joint
A telemetric tibial tray includes a lower plate that defines a plurality of cylindrical transducer cavities having circular load diaphragms. An upper plate is attached to the lower plate through support posts projecting from the load diaphragms. The support posts have a circular cross-section and a diameter of about 5.0 mm. The lower plate further defines wiring channels communicating between the transducer cavities and a central cavity housing the circuit board for the telemetric tray. The wiring channels are arranged at a 45 degree angle relative to the sagittal plane of the knee joint in order to reduce the effects of the wiring channel intersection on the strain sensitivity of the tray. Each transducer cavity includes a radial strain gage array with four pairs of radially aligned strain gages, each pair aligned at a 45 degree angle relative to the sagittal plane of the knee joint. Each pair of strain gages includes an inner gage positioned at the point of maximum positive micro-strain across the diaphragm when loaded, and an outer gage positioned at the point of maximum negative micro-strain, to thereby increase the differential strain measured by the gages and increase the strain sensitivity of the tibial tray.

Pressure Control Apparatus and Method

Pressure control in an isolated lower wellbore annulus, defined by a conduit sealably positioned within an isolated lower wellbore segment, is achieved while gravel packing by sensing the pressure within the isolated lower annulus while gravel packing and admitting fluid from the isolated lower annulus into the conduit at one or more discrete locations along the conduit when the sensed pressure corresponds to one or more threshold pressure conditions. The annulus pressure is sensed while gravel packing using a pressure-sensitive device disposed in the annulus, e.g., positioned by the conduit at a high-pressure location. The pressure-sensitive device actuates one or more valves carried along the conduit to admit fluid from the annulus into the conduit at one or more of the discrete locations, and thereby control the pressure in the isolated lower annulus.

Interspinous process implant having a compliant spacer

Medical devices for the treatment of spinal conditions are described herein. The medical device of this invention includes a spacer that is disposed between adjacent spinous processes and has a layer of a soft or compliant material. The layer is preferably thicker along those portions of the spacer directly contacting the adjacent spinous processes and is preferably thinner or non-existent adjacent to the anterior portion of the support member. This preferred asymmetry of the compliant layer allows the spacer to be seated between spinous processes as anteriorly as possible.

Method for completing a well using increased fluid temperature

Methods for forming a portion of a wellbore are provided. The well is drilled from a first selected depth to a second selected depth to form a bore through a surrounding earth formation. A fluid heating apparatus is disposed within the bore on a working string. Fluid is then heated by moving the fluid through the fluid heating apparatus in the wellbore. The process of circulating fluid adjacent the earth formation serves to also heat the surrounding formation so as to increase the fracture gradient. The fluid heating process may be conducted during a drilling procedure. Alternatively, the fluid heating process may be conducted in connection with a liner hanging and cementing process. A fluid flow restrictor is provided along a run-in assembly that serves to warm the fluids as they are circulated. The warm fluids provide convective heat to the surrounding earth formation, thereby reducing the formation's fracture gradient.

Coating device

A coating device (10) for coating a metal strip (12) in a metal melt (14) includes a shaft (16,18) that is rotatable in the metal melt (14) for guiding the metal strip (12), and a slide bearing (261, 262) for supporting the shaft (16,18). The slide bearing (261, 262) is formed by a bearing housing (32) and a bearing bushing (34) that has several pairs (361–364) of bearing surfaces and is configured so as to be circumferentially closed. The bearing bushing (34) is adapted to be set in selected rotational positions in circumferential direction in the bearing housing (32). A releasable bearing bushing fixing element (40) locks the bushing in each of the selected rotational positions with respect to the bearing housing (32). Thereby, a worn pair (361–364) of bearing surfaces can be simply replaced by a non-worn pair (361–364) of bearing surfaces by a rotation of the bearing bushing.

Hip protector implant

An implant system is described to decrease the risk of hip fracture in humans determined to be at increased risk for hip fracture, over a time span well over several years after implantation. This implant increases the size of the contact area on the proximal femur at the time of a fall, decreasing contact pressures and contact stresses. The implant may be able to absorb energy on impact or cause an increase of energy absorption by the soft tissues, thus decreasing the energy transfer to the proximal femur at the time of a fall. The implant may also strengthen the proximal femur, while minimizing stress shielding of the surrounding bone. In addition, it minimizes the risk of displacement should fracture occur, thus minimizing the risk of formal fracture surgery. The method of application minimizes risks associated with initial application of the implant.
