An instrument measures the LED junction temperature directly by taking advantage of the linear relationship between the forward current driven through the LED, the forward drop of the LED, and the junction temperature to determine the LED junction temperature.Calibration is conducted by placing two LEDs from the same family in ambient temperature and passing a small test current through each of the LEDs to obtain the forward drop of the LED at ambient temperature. The LED under test is then placed in an environmentally-controlled chamber where the temperature is raised a known amount above ambient temperature. Known low and high voltage values are associated with the ambient temperature and the environmental chamber temperature, causing the LED under test becomes a calibrated thermometer that can measure its own junction temperature due to the linear relationship between the forward drop and the junction temperature.

The pattern-generator cards can be cooled while the memory modules in the environmental chamber are heated. Pattern-generator cards can be removed for repair and module motherboards can be removed for inserting new memory modules for testing.

By alternately cooling and heating devices such as CPUs, devices can be subjected to mechanical stresses associated with power-on / power off cycles. A time based test implements the present invention based on time, and a temperature based test implements the present invention based on temperature. The present invention can be used to implement a run-in test in which the computer system is operated at an elevated temperature, thereby achieving results similar to those achieved by performing a run-in test in an environmental chamber at an elevated temperature. Alternatively, the a run-in test can be performed by repeatedly cycling the temperature between relatively high and low values.

A system for measuring the critical temperatures for thermal cracking of asphalt binders. The exemplary embodiment comprises a metal ring, at least one strain gauge attached to the inner surface of the ring, an environmental chamber, and a data acquisition system. A thermocouple may also be attached to the inside of the ring to monitor the ring temperature. A mold is provided for creating a circular asphalt binder test specimen. When properly cast, the specimen encircles the metal ring. The specimen and ring are placed within the environmental chamber for analysis as the temperature within the chamber is lowered. Thermal stress induced by temperature reduction within the asphalt binder test specimen is monitored by the strain gauge(s) and the cracking temperature is directly determined from the strain reading.
