Fast motion-estimation scheme

A motion estimation algorithm finds the best match for a given block or macroblock so that the resulting error signal has very low energy level which is computed, for e.g., by the SAD method. The motion estimation algorithm also provides for an optional sub-pixel level estimation and an inter4v search, and allows for restricting the number of searches for a Frame-frame ME (motion estimation) using Top-Top and Bottom-Bottom field MEs. The algorithm provides for a selective early exit and enables selecting a suitable search area with N candidate points (4 to 8) for starting the search. The search is conducted progressively till a minimum error signal (low energy level signal) is reached. The candidate points for search may be in a diamond shaped configuration, and there may be a plurality of successive diamond configurations, the number of which is configurable. The invention has application in MPEG-4 and H.264 standards.

The invention relates to time-of-flight mass spectrometers for the measurement of daughter ion spectra (also called fragment ion spectra or MS / MS spectra) and corresponding measurement methods.According to the invention, the ions of an ion source are initially accelerated only to an intermediate level of energy, allowing them to decompose at that energy level by metastable decomposition or by collisionally induced fragmentation (CID). The ions are then accelerated in a second step to a high energy level. Light fragment ions gain a higher velocity than heavier fragment ions or non-decomposed parent ions. The spectrum of fragment ions can be detected separated by mass in either linear or reflector mode. An ion selector at the low energy level selects a single type of parent ion in order to avoid superpositions with fragment ions of other parent ions. A particularly preferred embodiment raises the potential of ions, for there second acceleration, during their flight through a small electrically isolated flight path chamber.

The invention provides a device and a method for generating an active laser frequency standard based on a four-energy-level quantum system. An air chamber in which a gain medium is filled is formed in a Fabry-Perot cavity, wherein the gain medium is the atomic gas of the four-energy-level quantum system. Pumping laser is emitted into one end of the Fabry-Perot cavity, and the atomic gas is excited from a ground-state energy level to a fourth energy level. Atoms in the fourth energy level are transited to a low energy level through spontaneous radiation, and atom population inversion is realized between a third energy level and a second energy level. The atoms in the third energy level are transited to the second energy level through spontaneous radiation or stimulated radiation photons, stimulated radiation is generated under the action of the Fabry-Perot cavity, and laser is output from the other end of the Fabry-Perot cavity. The active laser frequency standard is high in frequency stability and accuracy.

A magnetron sputter reactor for sputtering deposition materials such as nickel and cobalt, for example, and its method of use, in which self-ionized plasma (SIP) sputtering is promoted. SIP is promoted by a small magnetron having poles of unequal magnetic strength and a high power applied to the target during sputtering. One embodiment of the present inventions is directed to sputter depositing a metal layer by biasing a sputter target with pulsed power in which the power applied to the target alternates between low and high levels. The high levels are, in one embodiment, sufficiently high to maintain a plasma for ionizing deposition material. The low levels are, in one embodiment, sufficiently low such that the power applied to the target during the high and low levels is, on average, low enough to facilitate deposition of thin layers if desired.

An intersubband quantum cascade laser structure includes multiple coupled laser stages, wherein each stage has a multilayer structure including an electron injector, an active region with at least one quantum well, and an electron reflector. Electrons injected from the injector into the active region at a high energy level relax to a lower energy level with the emission of a photon at, for example, mid-infrared wavelengths. The reflector reflects electrons at the higher energy level at which they were injected and transmits electrons from the lower energy level after emission of a photon. Multiple layers of semiconductor are formed on each side of the multistage structure to provide conduction across the device and to provide optical confinement of the photons emitted.

Method and apparatus to automatically determine tissue cancellation parameters in X-ray dual energy imaging

A method is provided to automatically determine a structure cancelled image in a dual energy decomposition system. A high energy and a low energy level image of internal anatomy formed of at least first and second types of structure are acquired. A characteristic mask is computed using a gradient mask and a localization mask. A first cancellation parameter is evaluated against the characteristic mask, and a second cancellation parameter is computed based upon the first cancellation parameter. The first or second cancellation parameter is selected from a range in a look-up table determined by an effective kVp used to acquire the high level image and an effective kVp used to acquire the low level image. An image of soft structure and an image of hard structure are obtained from the first and second energy level images according to a cancellation equation using the first and second cancellation parameters.

The destination device receives the data transmission and retransmission, demodulate the signal, and separates the received data into the new and retransmitted packet. The destination device then accumulates the energy of the retransmitted packet with the energy already accumulated for the packet received in error and decodes the accumulated packet. The accumulation of the additional energy provided by the subsequent retransmissions improves the probability of a correct decoding. The throughput rate can be improved since the packet received in error is retransmitted concurrently with the transmission of the new data packet. The capacity is maximized since the retransmission of the packet received in error is at a lower energy level than that of the new packet.
