Electrostatic discharge protection device for digital circuits and for applications with input/output bipolar voltage much higher than the core circuit power supply

An electrostatic discharge (ESD) device and method is provided. The ESD device can comprise a substrate doped to a first conductivity type, an epitaxial region doped to the second conductivity type, and a first well doped to the first conductivity type disposed in the substrate. The first well can comprise a first region doped to the first conductivity type, a second region doped to a second conductivity type, and a first isolation region disposed between the first region and the second region. The ESD device can also comprise a second well doped to a second conductivity type disposed in the substrate adjacent to the first well, where the second well can comprise a third region doped to the first conductivity type, a fourth region doped to the second conductivity type, and a second isolation region disposed between the third region and the fourth region. Still further, the ESD device can include a first trigger contact and second trigger contact comprising highly doped regions of either conductivity type, the first trigger contact disposed at a junction between the first well and the second well, and the second trigger contact disposed at either well.

Electronic engine control with reduced sensor set

An engine control apparatus is disclosed for determining crankshaft position, engine phase, engine loading, and intake air mass of an internal combustion engine (10) through monitoring intake air pressure fluctuations (120). The opening of the intake valve (44) is mechanically linked to the crankshaft position of an engine. When the intake valve (44) opens it creates air pressure fluctuations in the air induction system (14) of the engine (10). The control apparatus is configured to determine intake air pressure fluctuations indicative of an intake air event (100 to 110) and thus a particular crankshaft position, and their corresponding period of the engine cycle. The controller then uses this information to determine crankshaft speed and position for the purpose of fuel injection and ignition timing of the internal combustion engine. Engine phase is also determined on four-stroke engines. Intake air pressure is used to determine intake air mass and loading of the engine. This combination results in a single sensor used in a system to determine intake air mass, engine loading, injected fuel mass, and to determine timing for fueling and ignition events. The engine may also include a crankshaft position sensor in combination with monitoring intake air pressure over time to increase resolution in the determination of crankshaft position.

Apparatus and method for biased and weighted sampling of network traffic to facilitate network monitoring

An apparatus is described that performs biased and weighted sampling of network traffic to facilitate network monitoring. One embodiment of the apparatus includes a plurality of microcode controlled state machines, and a distribution circuit that routes input data to the plurality of microcode controlled state machines. A first individual microcode controlled state machine applies a first rule to the input data to determine first instructions associated with a first subset of the input data based on first sampling information associated with the first rule. A second individual microcode controlled state machine applies a second rule to the input data to determine second instructions associated with a second subset of the input data based on second sampling information associated with the second rule. The second sampling information differs from the first sampling information. This embodiment further includes a first circuit that generates first routing instructions for the first subset of the input data based on the first instructions, and that generates second routing instructions for the second subset of the input data based on the second instructions. This embodiment further includes a second circuit that routes the input data based on the first routing instructions and the second routing instructions. Advantageously, the apparatus provides an architectural framework well suited to a low cost, high speed, robust implementation of flexible, advanced network security and monitoring features and network traffic analysis.

Virtual processor methods and apparatus with unified event notification and consumer-produced memory operations

The invention provides, in one aspect, a virtual processor that includes one or more virtual processing units. These virtual processing units execute on one or more processors, and each virtual processing unit executes one or more processes or threads (collectively, “threads”). While the threads may be constrained to executing throughout their respective lifetimes on the same virtual processing units, they need not be. An event delivery mechanism associates events with respective threads and notifies those threads when the events occur, regardless of which virtual processing unit and/or processor the threads happen to be executing on at the time. The invention provides, in other aspects, virtual and/or digital data processors with improved dataflow-based synchronization. A process or thread (collectively, again, “thread”) executing withing such processor can execute a memory instruction (e.g., and “Empty” or other memory-consumer instruction) that permits the thread to wait on the availability of data generated, e.g., by another thread and to transparently wake up when that other thread makes the data available (e.g, by execution of a “Fill” or other memory-producer instruction).

Apparatus and method for associating categorization information with network traffic to facilitate application level processing

An apparatus is described that associates categorization information with network traffic to facilitate application level processing through processing of network traffic in accordance with provisioned rules and policies. The apparatus includes a plurality of microcode controlled state machines, wherein at least one microcode state machine processes at least one input data field using a hash function to generate a hash identifier. This embodiment further includes a distribution circuit that routes input data to the plurality of microcode controlled state machines, such that at least one individual microcode controlled state machine applies a rule to the input data to produce the at least one input data field, and to produce modification instructions based on the hash identifier. This embodiment further includes a first circuit that appends the hash identifier to the input data to produce modified input data based on the modification instructions, and that routes the modified input data in accordance with an output routing strategy. Advantageously, the apparatus provides an architectural framework well suited to a low cost, high speed, robust implementation of flexible, advanced network security and monitoring features and network traffic analysis.
