Method to control cell adhesion and growth on biopolymer surfaces

Methods for treating surfaces of polymeric substrates (as used in medical implants) with inert plasmas to promote the growth of bioentities (such as cells) on these surfaces is disclosed. The treated surfaces are subsequently exposed to an environment to form functionalities associated with enhanced growth of the bioentity on the surface. For example, the substrate may be exposed to the ambient environment. The bioentity may then be deposited on the modified surface. This inert plasma treatment and exposure to a suitable environment does not degrade the implants, and thus improved implants are created. Also, due to the specific functional groups at the modified surface, high cell densities are achieved.

Tilling apparatus

A tilling apparatus and a method of tilling soils which includes the use of a rotational shaft having a number of cutter assemblies located at spaced apart locations on the shaft in which each cutter assembly has a multitude of blades which rotate as the rotary shaft rotates to form a plurality of spaced apart trenches having the same spacing as the spacing of the cutters, and a width caused by the width of the blades. As the blades dig the trench, the soil contacted by the blades is granulated and is tossed about by the spinning blades so that some soil falls back into the trench and some falls along the periphery of the trench to form rows of aerated granules which promote enhanced growth of plants or seeds in the trench and along the edge of the trench to improve the yield of pasture having the trenches. Various attachments can be provided on the tilling apparatus, either in front of or towards the rear of the spinning blades for different purposes, such as rippers, seeders, levellers, or similar. The advantage of the tilling apparatus is that the soil is formed into granules which are used to form an aerated array of soil granules having enhanced growing properties for plants.

Glucose conversion to ethanol via yeast cultures and bicarbonate ions

InactiveUS20110201093A1Increased ethanol productionEnhance and improve ethanol yieldFungiBiofuelsMicroorganismGlucose polymers
The present invention is directed to the enhanced production of ethanol from fermentation using an ethanol producing microorganism. In particular, the present invention provides a process for the enhanced growth and metabolism of an ethanol producing microorganism (e.g., yeast), for the purpose of increasing or enhancing ethanol production, both in terms of total ethanol produced and in terms of the time required for ethanol producing microorganisms to convert carbohydrates and / or sugars to end products (i.e., ethanol). In accordance with this invention bicarbonate ions are used to enhance ethanol fermentation and / or reduce the time required for ethanol producing microorganisms to convert carbohydrates and / or sugars to end products, i.e., ethanol. The present invention can also be used for enhancing fermentation end products in, for example, the fuel ethanol, industrial, cheese, brewing, and wine making industries.

Plants having improved characteristics and a method for making the same

The present invention relates generally to the field of molecular biology and concerns a method for enhancing various economically important characteristics in plants. More specifically, the present invention concerns a method for improving yield-related traits, such as enhanced yield and / or enhanced growth, or modified content of storage compounds in plants by modulating expression in a plant of a nucleic acid encoding a GRP (Growht Related Protein) polypeptide. The present invention also concerns plants having modulated expression of a nucleic acid encoding a GRP polypeptide, which plants have improved characterisitics relative to control plants. The invention also provides hitherto unknown GRP-encoding nucleic acids, and constructs comprising the same, useful in performing the methods of the invention.

Method and apparatus for cultivating organisms

A bioreactor for growing organisms such as microalgae, includes a container having a parabolic cross section for carrying a culture medium for the organism. A generally triangular flow director in the bottom center of the container with a tube at its top end contains openings for directing fluid such as a growth medium under pressure upwardly into the culture medium to create laminar flow of the culture medium in counter rotating paths of travel on opposite sides of the flow director. Thus, thorough mixing of the culture medium and organism is achieved. The present invention provides a bioreactor system which ensures continuous, thorough mixing of organisms such as microalgae, growth medium and nutrients, and constant changing of the areas or zones of the biomass and movement to the available light, resulting in an enhanced growth environment for the organisms.

Sulfur-oxidizing plant growth promoting rhizobacteria for enhanced canola performance

InactiveUS20080070782A1Reduce the use of fungicidesBiocideBacteriaRhizobacteriaAdemetionine
Described herein is the isolation and identification of a number of sulfur oxidizing plant growth promoting rhizobacteria: RAY12, identified as Achromobacter piechaudii; RAY28, identified as Agrobacterium tumefaciens, RAY132, identified as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia; and RAY209, identified as Delftia acidovorans. The PGPR act to oxidize elemental sulfur which in turn provides sulfate for the plants. As a result of this arrangement, plants are able to grow more efficiently and effectively and have enhanced growth characteristics, for example, but by no means limited to, increased vigor, early emergence, increased emergence rate, increased biomass, increased plant leaf area, higher crop yield, increased pod number, increased pod weight, increased root biomass, increased seed weight, increased macro- and micro-nutrient uptake and the like. The sulfur-oxidizing PGPR may be applied to seeds, seed pieces, carrier materials, roots and planting soil.
