The invention is a novel photo-induced method for converting large quantities of silver nanospheres into nanoprisms, the nanoprisms formed by this method and applications in which the nanoprisms are useful. Significantly, this light driven process results in a colloid with a unique set of optical properties that directly relate to the nanoprism shape of the particles. Theoretical calculations coupled with experimental observations allow for the assignment of the nanoprism plasmon bands and the first identification of two distinct quadrupole plasmon resonances for a nanoparticle. Finally, unlike the spherical particles from which they derive and which Rayleigh light scatter in the blue, these nanoprisms exhibit scattering in the red, permitting multicolor diagnostic labels based not only on nanoparticle composition and size but also on shape.

In one embodiment, the electrolytic cell uses a proton exchange membrane (PEM) with an IrRuOx water oxidation catalyst and a Pt black water reduction catalyst to consume water vapor and generate molecular oxygen and a chemical fuel, molecular hydrogen. The operation of the electrolytic cell using water vapor supplied by a humidified carrier gas has been demonstrated under varying conditions of the gas flow rate, the relative humidity, and the presence or absence of oxygen. The performance of the system with water vapor was also compared to the performance when the device was immersed in liquid water.

The method comprises the following steps: proportionally weighing Tween 80, normal butanol, n-butanol and n-heptane to prepare two microemulsion systems; preparing transparent solutions at a certain concentration with Na2WO4.2H2O and Bi(NO3)3.5H2O respectively; adding the transparent solutions into the prepared microemulsion systems respectively; uniformly mixing the transparent solutions and the microemulsion systems after full stirring, then adjusting the pH to a certain value by using dilute ammonia water, placing the obtained microemulsion systems into a closed reaction kettle which is made of stainless steel and has white polytetrafluoroethylene lining for heat treatment at 150-220 DEG C for 3-9h, finishing treatment and cooling the substances to room temperature; and separating the product by a centrifuge, washing the obtained yellow precipitates with deionized water and ethanol multiple times and drying the precipitates for multiple hours, thus obtaining the novel visible light driven BI2WO6 photocatalyst.
