Undisturbed soil and sediment sampling

Device, system and method for sampling of soft sediments with retention of sample material and profile. A barge is anchored and stabilized in position; sampling tubes are driven through underlying sediments using continuous and controllable translational pneumatic force; a torpedo-shaped end piece leads the sampling tubes into the sediments. Once at desired depth, a rotational force is applied to sampling tubes. Fins located around torpedo prevent the torpedo from rotating and connection between leading sampling tube and torpedo is tightened. O-ring located between torpedo and leading sampling tube is squeezed as a result of such tightening and bulges inward pinching the core inside sampling tube. During retrieval, core is more likely to break at the location of the pinch which has introduced structural discontinuity; core above the pinch is capped by compacted material at the pinch. O-ring does not disturb sample integrity during descent. Winch and pulley mechanism may assist.

Disk drive with controlled reduced internal pressure

A rigid magnetic recording disk drive includes a vacuum pump attached to the disk drive housing for removing air from within the housing so that the disk drive is operated at a reduced internal gas pressure. The pump motor is controlled by control circuitry that receives an input signal representative of the pressure within the housing to enable the pressure to be maintained within a predetermined reduced pressure range. Because spindle motor current has been directly correlated with internal pressure, a signal representative of the spindle motor current is used as the input to the pump control circuitry. The pump control circuitry also prevents the pump from turning on until the spindle motor has reached its stable operating speed, and from turning on when the disk drive is reading or writing data. Because of the reduced internal pressure the disk drive operates at a significantly higher disk RPM with only a minimal increase in power consumption and without any increase in track misregistration.

System for mounting a machine tool in a tool holder

A system for mounting a tool in a tool holder combining a means for high-precision centering of the tool and a means for positive restraint of the tool from rotation within the tool holder. The tool holder includes a cylindrical aperture having a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the shank of a cylindrical tool. The tool is installed into the tool holder by heating the tool holder to a temperature sufficient to increase the pocket diameter sufficiently to accept the tool shank. In a first shrink-fit embodiment, the tool shank is further provided with an angular flat for engagement with a set screw to prevent the tool from being turned in the holder in use. In a second shrink-fit embodiment, a groove extending partially around the tool receives a tangential pin through a passage in the tool holder. The tool is rotated in the holder until the pin binds in the groove, thus preventing any further rotation of the tool in the holder during use.

Wire retainer

It is an object of the invention to provide a wire retainer capable of easily mounting a wire on a retainer part and of simply fixing the wire retainer to a circuit board. A lower part of a long cylindrical body forms a fixed part which is fixed to the hole defined in the circuit board by a solder, and a base part of a retainer member is fixed to a substantially central part of the long cylindrical body. The base part has an extension part extending upward therefrom and a restriction part is fixed to an upper end of the extension part and extends downward along an upper portion of the long cylindrical body. A lead wire is inserted between the restriction part and the upper portion and retained by the retainer member.

Assembly comprising a gas turbine combustion chamber integrated with a high pressure turbine nozzle

The high pressure turbine nozzle is mechanically connected to a downstream end portion of the combustion chamber and inner and outer connection ferrules connect the combustion chamber and turbine nozzle assembly to inner and outer metal shrouds in order to hold said assembly between the shrouds. Locking members are provided to prevent the turbine nozzle from turning about its axis relative to at least one of the metal shrouds so as to prevent the forces that are exerted on the turbine nozzle vanes by the flow of gas coming from the chamber being taken up by the portions of the connection ferrules that extend between the combustion chamber and turbine nozzle assembly and the metal shrouds.

Auxiliary power system for a motor vehicle

An auxiliary power system for a motor vehicle primary engine used to drive primary engine accessories when the primary engine is not operating. The system comprises a secondary engine that drives a hydraulic pump. The hydraulic pump is connected to a hydraulic motor. The hydraulic motor is integrated with an accessory belt drive system on a primary engine. The secondary engine drives the ABDS system through the hydraulic pump and hydraulic motor when the primary engine is not operating, thus allowing various primary engine accessories such as air conditioning to be operated while the primary engine is off. A one-way clutch on the primary engine crankshaft prevents the primary engine crankshaft from being turned when the hydraulic motor is driving the belt. A one-way clutch on the hydraulic motor prevents it from being driven when the primary engine is in operation.

Combination anti-skid anti-theft and vehicle lifting system

Disclosed herein is a combination anti-skid, anti-theft and vehicle lifting device. In particular, the device disclosed herein attaches easily and quickly to a vehicle tire to help extract the tire and the vehicle to which it is attached from ice, mud, snow, or other immobilizing medium. It also converts readily to a conventional vehicle lifting jack for changing tires. It also converts readily to a "tire boot" and so can be used to prevent vehicle theft. Finally, it is readily convertible to as to immobilize the vehicle steering wheel, also for theft prevention.

Independently interactive interconnected lock

ActiveUS20060191303A1The locking process is simpleQuick fixWing handlesWing fastenersLocking mechanism
An independently interactive interconnected lock includes an interconnecting mechanism that retracts a latchbolt and a deadbolt when an inner handle is moved between an up position, an intermediate position and a down position. The deadbolt is retracted by a deadbolt lock mechanism as the inner handle moves from the up position to the intermediate position. The latchbolt is retracted by a latchbolt lock mechanism as the inner handle continues to move from the intermediate position to the down position. When the inner handle is moved to the up position, both the latchbolt and deadbolt are extended and the deadbolt lock mechanism is disconnected from the latchbolt lock mechanism such that manipulation of the latchbolt lock mechanism to retract the latchbolt does not retract the deadbolt. The inner handle operates with low handle torque because the deadbolt and the latchbolt are not retracted simultaneously.

Low profile, lockable handle, housing and cover assembly

A handle, housing and cover assembly includes an relatively thick oval handle sandwiched between a relatively thin oval housing base and a relatively thin oval cover. The oval exteriors of these three relatively movable components are of substantially the same size and shape, and align when the cover is closed and when the handle is in its normal, non-operated position to provide a low profile stack of components that can nest comfortably within the palm of one's hand so the palmed cover can be moved by gentle hand pressure between closed and open positions, and so the handle can be pivoted by fingertip pressure between non-operated and operated positions. The cover, when open, provides access to a keyway into which a key can be inserted and turned to selectively prevent and permit turning of the handle relative to the housing base.

Inverted pendulum type vehicle

An inverted pendulum type vehicle includes a control device which sets a target turning angular velocity ωz_cmd to a nonzero value not only when a predetermined steering operation is performed but also at least in an external force application state in which an external force for turning the vehicle about a yaw axis is applied to the vehicle. The control device controls a first actuator device and a second actuator device such that a second moving operation unit has a different velocity from a first moving operation unit in a left-right direction. Such an inverted pendulum type vehicle makes it possible to turn the vehicle easily even in a state in which no steering operation is performed.
