An object of the present invention is to provide a method, an apparatus and a system for automatically recognizing motions and actions of moving objects such as humans, animals and machines.

Measuring instruments are attached to an object under observation. The instruments measure a status change entailing the object's motion or action and to issue a signal denoting the measurements. A characteristic quantity extraction unit extracts a characteristic quantity from the measurement signal received which represents the motion or action currently performed by the object under observation. A signal processing unit for motion/action recognition correlates the extracted characteristic quantity with reference data in a database containing previously acquired characteristic quantities of motions and actions. The motion or action represented by the characteristic quantity with the highest degree of correlation is recognized and output.

The invention relates generally to a system and method for monitoring and automatically delivering a therapy for sleep-related disordered breathing. In one form the present invention relates to an external device for monitoring for sleep-related disordered breathing in communication with an implantable medical device for delivering an electrical stimulation therapy. In another form the present invention relates to an implantable medical device for detecting sleep-related disordered breathing episode(s) and an external apparatus (e.g., a CPAP machine) for providing therapy to terminate, and/or reduce, said episode(s). In this form of the invention, the implantable medical device communicates with the external apparatus so that the therapy provided corresponds in magnitude and duration to the severity and/or length of the episode(s). In yet another form, an implantable apparatus detects said disordered breathing episode(s) and a hybrid therapy is provided by both the implantable apparatus and an external apparatus.

A method and apparatus for steering of a flexible needle into tissue using a steering robotic platform for manipulation of the needle shaft, and by use of a semi-active arm for locating and orienting of the steering robot on the patient's body. As opposed to other steering methods, the robot does not hold the base of the needle, which is its proximal region, but rather grips the shaft of the needle by means of a manipulatable needle gripping device, near its distal end. The needle gripper attached to the robotic platform may be equipped with a traction assembly to provide motion to the needle in its longitudinal direction, such that it co-ordinates the entry of the needle with the desired entry angle. The gripping of the needle at its distal end, close to its insertion point, provides the needle manipulator with a low profile, with concomitant advantages.

A telescopic drilling method includes the steps of drilling an outer bore through a surface, inserting a hollow outer conduit into the outer bore, and at least partially inserting a first hollow inner conduit through the outer conduit. Next, the method includes the steps of preventing the first inner conduit from moving longitudinal with respect to the outer conduit engaging a rotatable inner drill bit with a ring drill bit and further drilling the outer bore using a unitary drill bit head to a successive depth. The present invention relates to cushioning apparatus having a plurality of intersecting columns, the columns being formed from a thermoplastic, silicone, two-part, or other gel material. The cushioning apparatus are extremely strong and durable yet provide an improved cushioning apparatus. The intersecting columnar configuration of the cushioning apparatus allow for weight to be shared with neighboring column walls. When force is exerted on the columns, the column walls are designed to buckle in the areas of greatest pressure. The column buckling diffuses energy from the areas of highest pressure effectively eliminating pressure points. As the polymer gel collapses within the column walls, the column walls essentially collapse at least partially in a lateral direction allowing pressure to flow away from the areas of greatest pressure to areas of lesser pressure. This provides an improved cushioning surface on which a user can sit, sleep, or other types of cushioning can be provided.
