A Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) system includes clients that make management connections to an external manager server using web-browsing protocols. A discovery process tests a variety of transport methods by sending packets using different protocols to several ports of the external manager. Some packets may be blocked by firewalls, while other packets are allowed to pass through. Successful packet replies indicate transport capabilities of the client. When a client makes a VoIP call to another client, the external manager compares transport capabilities of the two clients and selects a transport capability that is common to both clients. Transport methods include direct client-to-client connections using TCP or UDP to an arbitrary port or well-known port 80 or 443, and indirect using a voice-proxy server that each client connects to using web standards such as HTTP or SSL. When a client can make only outgoing connections, that client initiates the connection.

The arrangement can further include an authentication protocol such as a 3-way authentication protocol, a 2-wayx2 authentication protocol and a Fiat-Shimir authentication protocol.

Method to check communication link reliability

Techniques to mitigate the effects of link imbalance for the uplink between a terminal (or UE) and multiple base stations (or Node Bs). In one aspect, the serving base station (i.e., the one designated to transmit packet data to the terminal) monitors the uplink received SNR for each terminal designated to receive packet data transmission. The serving base station then determines, based on the uplink received SNR and an SNR threshold, whether or not link imbalance potentially exists for each such terminal. In another aspect, if it is determined that link imbalance potentially exists, then a 3-way handshake is performed to check the reliability of a feedback mechanism used for packet data transmission. Appropriate responsive actions may then be performed based on the result of the check.

Method of forcing 1's and inverting sum in an adder without incurring timing delay

A summing circuit for an adder decodes control signals to determine that the result should be manipulated, and generates a half-sum output which is used to produce a manipulated result based on the control signals. The half-sum output is combined with a previous carry bit to complete the sum operation. The control signals can invert the adder result, or force the result to be all 1's. These functions can be effectuated in a 3-way multiplexer that combines the operand inputs and control signals. For inversion, two separate logic circuits produce true and complement half-sums in parallel, and the appropriate half-sum is selected for the half-sum output. For a result of all 1's, a force—1 control signal pulls the half-sum output node to electrical ground and the final output is manipulated by gating the carry signals with the force—1 signal. The two functions are implemented without introducing additional delay.
